The Alpha’s Borrowed Luna
Chapter 176
Elowen
“Do you really think I would let you go without me?” she murmured against my hair.
“Of course not,” I replied, my voice muffled against her shoulder.
Just as we were about to enter the waiting cat, footsteps pounded behind us. I turned, heart tightening, to see Frost hurrying down the steps alone, looking more undone than I’d ever seen him.
He reached the bottom step, breathing heavily, and watched as the driver finished loading my few bags. His movements were stiff when he finally stepped towards me, the usual icy control in his eyes replaced by a raw, turbulent storm.
“Elowen,” he started, his voice raspy, thick with strain. He sounded like he was forcing the words past something tight in his throat. “I… I’m so sorry. About everything.” He struggled, shaking his head slightly, looking utterly lost for a moment. “I can’t. I…*
He stopped, took a ragged breath, and then something inside him seemed to snap. “Kaius is an absolute asshole!” he bit out, the words sharp and venomous. “Putting you through this! He doesn’t deserve you! He never did!”
I stared, momentarily stunned into silence. I’d never seen him like this; his eyes held such raw helplessness, yet beneath it, a profound, undeniable care. Maybe he had known all along, seen the truth of Kaius’s feelings – or lack thereof. Perhaps he’d even foreseen how this contract, this whole precarious situation, was always destined to end for me. But whatever he knew or suspected,
his outburst laid bare one undeniable truth: Frost genuinely cared about me.
His pain was real, his fury was real. And right now, amidst the ruins of a life built on shaky foundations and painful illusions, his feelings felt like the only solid, authentic thing I could grasp. He and Kaius were nothing alike.
“Thank you, Frost,” I whispered, the words heartfelt despite the turmoil swirling inside me.
He seemed to wrestle himself back from the edge. The fury receded slightly, leaving behind a deep, aching sadness in his eyes. “I hope you’ll be alright, Elowen,” he said, his voice quieter now but still thick with emotion. “I hope you find your place. Somewhere
good.”
“I guess this is goodbye,” I whispered, the words feeling like stones in my throat.
“I don’t like goodbyes,” he replied, his voice low and rough.
“Neither do I.”
A heavy silence stretched between us, thick with unspoken emotions. It felt final. I gave him a small, sad smile and turned towards the car door, accepting the end.
Just as my hand reached the handle, his hand clamped onto my arm spinning me around. Before I could register the shock, his other hand cupped the back of my head, and his mouth crashed down onto mine.
It wasn’t gentle. It was a collision, fierce and desperate, fuelled by a pain that radiated from him in waves. He kissed me with a bruising intensity, a raw outpouring of frustration, longing, and something akin to despair. He clung to me for a heart–stopping moment, his body trembling slightly against mine, before tearing himself away abruptly, leaving me breathless and stunned. His eyes were wide, glistening, filled with a raw agony that mirrored the tears still tracking down his face. He opened his mouth as if to say something, the just shook his head, unable to form words.
My mother touched my shoulder gently. “Elowen, leave everything behind. It’s time to go,” she said, her voice soft but firm.
Frost took a ragged step back, swiping angrily at his wet cheek.

I nodded mutely to my mother, my lips still tingling, the ghost of his desperate kiss and the impossible feeling of his tears searing themselves into my memory. With one last, confused and aching look at Frost’s tormented face, I climbed into the car after my
mother.
As the door closed and the car pulled away, I resisted the urge to look back. Looking back would only make it harder to move forward. And forward was the only direction left to me now.
The driver glanced at us in the rearview mirror. “Ma’am, please, where would you like to go?”
I looked to my mother, realizing I had no answer to this most basic question. Where did one go when they’d lost everything?
My mother gave the driver an address I didn’t recognize, then squeezed my hand reassuringly. I stared out the window as we passed through the pack gates for the last time, watching as the forest I’d come to love disappeared into the darkness.
