“Does whatever you have to tell me endanger you?” Frost asked, his expression serious as we stood just inside the doorway of my room.
“Not really, why?” I replied, though uncertainty flickered through me Did Lysandra’s suspicions put me at risk? I wasn’t entirely
sure.
“Then I can promise you, Kaius wouldn’t know.” His eyes held mine, steady and sincere.
I took a deep breath. “Lysandra suspects something.”
“Well, she’s a fool; nothing to bother about.” His dismissive tone brought a small smile to my lips despite my worries.
“This is something to bother about,” I insisted. “She had seen me when we both visited the training grounds. And she had pointed out the fact that I had no visible marks due to the…” I trailed off, embarrassed to reference Kaius’s night with Lysandra. “She has these theories; she thinks this might be a mistake, and I hadn’t actually been mated to Kaius, or there is some kind of agreement, she also suspects that I blackmailed him into this.”
“Blackmail?” Frost scoffed, the idea clearly absurd to him. “You don’t have to worry. I bet she is hoping this is an agreement too.”
Of course Lysandra wanted me gone. She wanted Kaius for herself–that much was obvious.
Suddenly, a sharp knock interrupted our conversation.
“I’m not expecting anyone,” I said, glancing toward the door with unease.
“That must be the maid. It’s lunch time.” Frost moved to open the door.
Sure enough, a young girl in a uniform stood outside with a covered tray. She curtseyed nervously, eyes darting between Frost and

“I’ll leave you to eat,” Frost said, stepping aside to let the maid enter “Try not to worry about Lysandra.”
As the door closed behind him, she set the covered tray on the small table beside my bed, curtseyed again, and hurried out. My stomach growled at the scent of warm food–I hadn’t realized how hungry I was until now. I ate quickly, mechanically, my mind still churning with the day’s confrontations.
After finishing my meal, I decided to rest. Sleep would be a welcome escape from my racing thoughts. I stretched out massive bed, allowing my eyes to close.

I must have dozed off, for I woke with a start to the sound of the bedroom door opening. Twilight had fallen, casting the room in shadows.
“Kaius?” I called out, sitting up. No response came. “Kaius!”
My heart began to race as silence answered me. Something was wrong. Kaius wouldn’t enter so silently, nor would he ignore my calls. Frost would have announced himself.
Footsteps approached–too many sets to be just one person. Fear coursed through me like ice water. I slid from the bed as quietly as possible, backing toward the bathroom. It was the only place I might hide.
I slipped inside, locking the door behind me. My hands trembled as searched for a weapon–anything to defend myself. The best I could find was a heavy glass bottle of bath oil,

“Help!” I cried out, hoping someone in the corridors might hear. “Somebody help!”
The bathroom door shuddered under a heavy impact. Once, twice–o the third blow, the wood splintered around the lock. Terror clawed at my throat as the door burst open.
Dark figures poured in–at least ten of them, all dressed in black, faces masked. Before I could scream again, a hand clamped over my mouth, fingers digging painfully into my cheeks.
“You speak again, and I promise you that will be the last time you ever speak,”
voice hissed in my ear.
I was dragged from the bathroom, surrounded by my attackers. They pushed binding my wrists behind my back with painful efficiency.
