Another moved closer, his hand pulling aside the collar of my dress reveal Kaius’s mark on my neck. “She had been marked by him; that should be the reason.”
I recognized him–one of the men who trained with Lysandra. A cold certainty settled in my gut. This was her doing. She’d orchestrated this attack, knowing Kaius was away.
The man tracing Kaius’s mark pulled out a dagger, letting the tip rest against my throat. “This would be very fun,” he murmured, his tone making my skin crawl.
“Stay away from me,” I warned, trying to sound braver than I felt. Ten against one–I had no chance of physically overpowering them. My only hope was to stall, to think of a way out of this nightmare.
“Stop the pretence; I only want a taste of what the Alpha enjoys.” 1 free hand groped at my body, making me flinch away.
“You do know what Kaius would do when he finds out, right?” I said, grasping for anything that might give them pause. “He would have your balls.”
My captor laughed, the sound ugly with menace. “And how will he know that? By then you will be long gone.”
Cold dread washed over me as I fully comprehended my situation. They weren’t just here to frighten me. They intended to kill me.
There’s no time for this,” another man said impatiently. “Just slit her throat and let’s get it over with.”
I looked around wildly, searching for any escape route, any weapon within reach. Nothing. I was completely at their mercy.
One figure remained apart from the others, hooded and silent, observing from the shadows. The leader? I couldn’t tell.
“You can’t… You cannot kill me,” I said desperately. “That is an offense against the pack, you will be seen as traitors, do you really think the Alpha wouldn’t find out? But I’ll give you all one last chance, Leave; otherwise, you will suffer the consequences; this is my promise to you.”
The bluff was pathetic even to my own ears, but it was all I had.
“Will you be threatened by this… Omega?” sneered the man with the dagger. “She thinks being mated to the Alpha changes anything, and you all are scared of her?”
“Not her. Alpha Kaius,” one of the others said quietly.
“He is far away, following some false trail,” the leader replied with disturbing confidence.
They knew Kaius was gone. They’d planned this, creating a diversion to get him away from the pack house.
“Just kill her already,” someone urged from the back of the group./
The man with the dagger trailed its tip down my throat to the neckline of my dress. “No, not until I have a piece of her.”
My stomach turned at his meaning. I tried to pull away, but hands gripped my shoulders, holding me in place.
“You fool, we won’t risk our lives just for some of your greedy wants another attacker growled.
They were arguing among themselves–a small chance, perhaps my only one.
“You don’t have to do this; there is still a chance…” I began, trying to appeal to those who seemed less eager for violence.

Chapter 43
The man with the dagger backhanded me across the face, the force the blow snapping my head to the side. Blood filled my mouth, metallic and warm.
“Enough talking,” someone said. “Use the silver bullet. It’s cleaner.”
Silver. My blood ran cold. A silver bullet to the heart would kill a werewolf instantly, no chance of healing. This was it, then. After everything–surviving Dorian, securing my mother’s freedom, enduring Kaius’s possession–I would die here, alone on the floor of a bedroom I’d never considered mine.
One of the attackers produced a gun, the metal gleaming dully in the fading light. I closed my eyes, unwilling to watch my own
execution.
The sound of a gunshot ripped through the air.
