Chapter 15: A Painful Resolution
(Freya’s POV)
Emily’s voice stabbed through the phone. I could hear the disbelief, the anger simmering just beneath her
tone.
“He hasn’t responded at all? Not even one word? Aaron would never–never–just ignore something like this,
Freya. Are you sure? Are you absolutely sure the message went through?” Each word came out clipped, her
frustration clear.
I turned away from the window, staring at the blank walls of my office as if they would give me an answer. My
palm was sweaty where I gripped the phone, yet my voice came out surprisingly calm. Detached, even.
“It went through,” I said softly.
“How do you know?” she fired back immediately, her volume rising. “Freya, phone signals mess up all the
time out here. And there’s no way Aaron, your mate, and childhood friend, would-” She stopped herself as ¡í the words were too impossible to even say. “-would turn his back on you and your… child.”
At the sound of the word “child,” my heart felt like it stopped for a second. My wolf, Bella, whined softly inside me, her sadness mixing with mine, creating this unbearable ache.
I didn’t know what to say, so I stayed silent.
Emily’s voice softened, quickly shifting to pleading. “Maybe he didn’t get it at all. Maybe the phone’s broken? Maybe–maybe he’s caught up in something really important. It’s Aaron. You’ve been mates for two years, Freya. Two years. That has to count for something!”
“Two years of nothing more than duty,” I muttered, keeping my voice low.
“That’s not fair!” she shot back immediately. “I’ve seen the way he looks at you sometimes–when he thinks
no one else is watching.”
My stomach twisted painfully at her words, though I couldn’t tell why.
“Stop.” The word came out sharper than I intended, making me wince. I rubbed my temples. “Enough, Emily,” I
murmured tiredly. “Say no more.”
“Freya, listen to m-”
But I couldn’t. I couldn’t listen to hope anymore.
I hung up, leaving her words unfinished. My hand was steady as I placed the phone face down on the desk, though my heart felt anything but.
I looked out the window again, but where once the light had seemed pleasant, now it only seemed harsh against the shadows of my thoughts.
Emily thinks I should fight for him, for us, I thought bitterly. But fighting for someone who doesn’t care? That’s just embarrassing.
Turning on my computer, I forced my emotions into a tight, unyielding box. I navigated to the Silver Moon

Medical Center’s website with precise, mechanical clicks.
This is the right choice, I told myself firmly. For the pack. For my sanity,
Bella growled faintly, the sound haunting, like a low wail that echoed through me
“Our cub will never be wanted,” I whispered back to her. “You know that.”
Her growl turned into a soft whimper that made my throat tighten. My fingers hovered over the form that would confirm my appointment. All it would take was one more click. Just one.
Suddenly, a knock at my office door startled me so badly I jerked forward, 1 hastily minimized the screen, guilt
rising unbidden in my chest.
“Come in,” I called, trying to sound composed,
Sarah stepped in, balancing a neat stack of reports in her arms. The moment her eyes landed on me, concer
filled her expression.
“Luna… are you alright?” she asked hesitantly. “You still look pale.”
“I’m fine, Sarah,” I assured her quickly. “Just catching up on work.”
But my tone didn’t seem to convince her.
“After what happened yesterday, I wasn’t sure you’d even come in today,” she said pointedly, setting the reports on my desk.
I frowned. “What do you mean? What happened yesterday?”
Sarah blinked in surprise. “You don’t remember fainting in the office?”
I stilled.
Her voice picked up speed, as if she couldn’t get the words out fast enough. “You looked so sick, Luna. I didn’t know what else to do! I had to call Alpha Aaron. He came immediately–you should’ve seen how
worried he was.”
“Aaron?” I murmured.
She nodded vigorously. “He left a meeting with the pack allies! Just dropped everything to come get you. He even carried you all the way to the car himself.”
I didn’t know what to feel in that moment. Couldn’t even think clearly.
“So he cares,” Sarah said softly, almost to herself. Her hesitant smile blossomed fully. “See? That’s what true mates do, right? They-”
“Stop,” I interrupted, more sharply than I intended. “He has someone else.”
Sarah froze, confusion crossing her face.
“You mean Caroline Redwood?” she asked carefully.
I nodded.
Her earlier light faded like a candle snuffed out. I could see her perfectly constructed picture of Aaron and me crumble piece by piece. She didn’t say a word as she bowed slightly, then left the room.
The silence she left behind was deafening.

I looked back at the computer screen. Silver Moon Medical Center stared back at me, the form waiting for my final decision.
Do it, I told myself. Do it now before you change your mind.
With trembling fingers, I clicked the confirmation button. A message popped up announcing my appointment
had been set.
Bella howled, a piercing wail that shook me to my core. But I silenced her, steeling myself against the
overwhelming emotions threatening to choke me.
I needed a distraction.
When Daniel Rivers texted inviting me to lunch, it felt like a lifeline I didn’t know I needed.
I accepted immediately.
After wrapping up my morning duties, I made my way downstairs to wait for him. The cool air steadied me somewhat, though I couldn’t shake the weight in my chest.
Just as I stepped outside, a sleek black SUV pulled up to the building’s entrance. My pulse quickened against
my will.
Aaron.
He stepped out in that effortless way he always did, all commanding presence and authority. But I barely had a second to take him in before she appeared.
Caroline Redwood.
She glided out of the passenger seat, her beauty so sharp and polished it was painful to look at. Her strawberry–blonde hair shimmered like liquid sunlight as she adjusted her coat.
Aaron turned slightly, his broad frame blocking her partially from view. He didn’t seem to notice me standing there, and for that, I was grateful.
Caroline did, though.
Her eyes flicked to mine briefly, her lips curving into a small, polite smile. But there was no warmth there. Nothing genuine. Just a calculated move, like every step she took.
I considered looking away, considered walking off. But instead, I stood my ground, refusing to show her any
weakness.
Out of the corner of my ear, I heard whispers.
“That’s Caroline Redwood, isn’t it?” one pack member whispered to another.
“Yeah. She’s the one who saved the Alpha from that attack years ago.”
“I heard she’s his true love. Everyone knows that Luna Freya’s just here because of a political arrangement.
Poor thing.”
The words struck deep, and I fought to keep my expression neutral. My nails dug into my palms. Caroline’s cool smile widened just a fraction before she turned away, following Aaron into the building.
