Rita’s eyes narrowed in confusion, but she pulled out her phone from her pocket, scrolled through it, and handed it to Ivy Ivy read the article and laughed again. It highlighted her struggles with alcohol, false claims about rehabilitation, and how it had affected her marriage to Mason.
Thousands of people had seen it, and she wasn’t surprised that they–including Rita–believed it. The only surprise was that Cheryl had said all that, not Mason.

Rita’s home was cozy with modern decorations. There were two couches in the living room and a tube of toys close to the

Ivy sat on the black couch and crossed her legs. She looked around the room, wondering why Rita was so afraid to let her in. The room didn’t look unsettled or as if Rita had been changing homes.
However, Ivy noticed that there were only two picture frames. One showed the little boy as a baby, and the other looked more recent, with him and Rita.
A door opened and the small child entered with

Before Ryan could respond, Rita returned to the living room with the young lady Ivy had met before. Rita was smiling now, looking relaxed.

“Hi, nice to meet you again,” Ally said and turned to Rita. “She came here some days ago.”
“Oh,” Rita laughed. “Come Ryan, go play with Ally.”
Ryan waved at Ivy as he went to Ally.
“I’ll come visit again,” Ivy smiled, waving as he left. “He’s so cute.”
“Thank you,” Rita said, sitting on the other couch. “Now tell me, what happened between you and your ex–best friend?”
Ivy leaned back on the couch and told Rita everything, except about her contract marriage with Silas. Thinking about it now, she felt stupid for having told Cole and their father about it. It was dumb of her to seek their validation that way. “Oh, that’s a lot, Ivy. I’m sorry” Rita said softly.

Rita crossed her legs and averted her eyes. “Well, Ryan’s dad is late, I’ve been taking care of him alone.”
