Chapter 130: A Switch In Tone.
“Are you there, ma’am?”
Detective Spence’s voice cut through Ivy’s thoughts, causing her to jolt. “Yes, yes, detective. Sorry,” she said softly. “I… will call him right now.”
“Alright, ma’am,” Detective Spence said calmly.
“Thank you for your help.”
“Okay, ma’am. Take care.”
“Bye,” she said and ended the call.
Ivy sighed, tapping her temple to calm herself, but despite this, she couldn’t help the anger that tightened up her chest.
What was wrong with her father?
He always made everything about himself, and now he had convinced Geoffrey to give up on the search, especially since it had finally yielded results.
She dialed Geoffrey’s number and waited for it to ring. She had to convince him again, she understood how conflicted he might be feeling with Patrick forcing his own opinion on him.
But Geo didn’t pick up, so she tried again and again. After the fourth ring, which was still unanswered, Ivy felt a knot form in her stomach. She clenched a fist, annoyed that Patrick had scared Geo.
“Screw it!” she scoffed and dialed her father’s number.
Almost immediately, Patrick picked up. “Yes.” His answer was flat.
“Why don’t you let Geo see his family?” she demanded, keeping her voice low.
“And why the hell are you calling?” he hissed, his tone tingling with malice. “I already disowned you. Don’t drag Geo down with you in your miserable lonely life. He knows what he wants!”
She scoffed, not even offended by his tone because she had expected it. “I was telling Geo how to do what was right.” He chuckled dryly, and she could imagine the frown on his face. “Since when do you know what’s right and wrong? The person that made the same awful mistake twice?”
Ivy hissed, refusing to let his jab sting. “This has nothing to do with me. We’re talking about Geo and his family.”
“I am his family!” Patrick snapped. “And he’s okay with me and Cole.”
Ivy’s mouth twisted into a frown. “Yes, but he does have a real family and he needs to know them, the same way they need to know him. Stop being selfish, it’s not about you!”
“The next time you call me or Geo, I will have you arrested!” Patrick snapped, a mixture of anger and threat in his voice.” Fuck off!” Then he ended the call.
Ivy groaned, punching the air. “God damn!”
She tightened her lip together, trying to contain her frustration. “It’s not over,” she muttered, convincing herself.
This was far from over. If anything, Patrick just gave her more reason to push, and she’ll do everything in her power to convince Geoffrey.
She exhaled slowly and then dialed Geoffrey’s number again. When he didn’t pick up, she texted him.
“I know how you must be feeling, and I understand. But don’t give up now. I’m here with you. Call me when you can. Love you.”
Then she sent it and adjusted her hair before returning back to the room. As she was about to enter, the brown door opened Wills and Rex came out.
“I hope she’s paying you enough for the loyalty,” Wills scoffed as he walked away.
Ivy’s forehead furrowed. “I hope the money lasts you a lifetime,” she called after him.
Rex gave her a curt nod and followed Wills outside. Ivy hissed, turning to open the door, but as she entered, she saw Theresa drying her tears.
“Oh,” Ivy said, her heart pounding with hurt as she moved closer to her. “It’s over now,” she said softly, kissing Theresa on her hair.
Theresa clung to her, her body shaking from the impact of her tears.
Janice ran a hand through Theresa’s hair. “You did well, you did good.”
Theresa sniffled as she straightened up. “I’m not angry at all. I’m… just relieved.” She took a tissue from the box Janice pushed towards her and wiped her nose.

“You’re so strong,” Ivy said with a warm smile.
Theresa nodded and stood up. “Thank you, Ivy,” she said and turned to Janice. “Thanks for everything, Jan.”
“You’re welcome,” Janice said, standing up as well. “Do take care.”
Theresa nodded, picked up the file on the table and proceeded to the door. Ivy waved at Janice, who waved back, before following Theresa out of the office.
“I’m going to get drunk tonight,” Theresa said cheerfully, but her eyes gleamed with sadness.
“You deserve it,” Ivy said softly.
She watched as Theresa’s eyes softened for a moment, before she looked away.
“Are you okay?” Ivy asked, concern in her tone.
“Yes.” Theresa said with a tight smile. “I just can’t believe it’s over.”
Ivy rushed to her side, holding her shoulder. “Let’s go to your house together. I’m going to spend the night with you.” Theresa shook her head. “No, I can’t do that to you, Ivy. You have an opening to prepare for.”
“And I can start tomorrow.”
“But you-”
“No buts, T. Take me back to my office, I’ll back my things and I’m coming with you,” Ivy interrupted.
She saw the hesitation in Theresa’s eyes before it faded. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, love.” Ivy smiled.
Theresa drove her back to her office and Ivy got all her things. She texted Silas, letting him know she wasn’t coming home, then proceeded to Theresa’s house.
When they arrived, Ivy was surprised to see how luxurious and cozy Theresa’s house was.
“Welcome to my house,” Theresa said, dropping her bag on the couch.
“Wow! This is beautiful!” Ivy exclaimed.
“Thank you and sorry about the mess,” Theresa said, gesturing to the pile at the entrance which Ivy didn’t see at first. “I just had the locks changed.”
Ivy’s heart fluttered. “It’s okay.”
“Let’s get something to eat,” Theresa said, already walking towards a room. “Come.”
Ivy followed her and was shown around. They ordered pizza and spent the night, gisting and watching a movie.
Eventually, they slept side by side on the couch in the living room.
The next day, Ivy got ready for work. She didn’t bring any extra clothes so she ended up trying Theresa’s clothes.
“I think this is better,” she said, adjusting the gown. This was the third dress she was trying and only this black gown seems to size her.
“I think so too,” Theresa said observing the outfit. “And we’re matching too.”
Ivy chuckled. “I guess it is then.”
“Yes.”
They had breakfast at a five–star restaurant Theresa had suggested and afterwards, she drove Ivy to her office. “Thank you T,” Ivy said as she stepped out of the car.
“I should be thanking you. You made everything better,” Theresa smiled.
“Glad you’re feeling better.”
“Sure. Talk later?”
“Definitely. Bye.” Ivy waved as she waited till Theresa left the premises. Once she was gone, she made her way inside.” Good morning people,” she said. “We have a long day ahead.”
The day was spent taking pictures of the famous places in San Jose. While Ivy worked, she also learned about the city’s beautiful history. After three hours, they finished up and then started cataloging their works.
By 8pm, Ivy and her teams were finally done.
“Phew!” she exclaimed. “That was… intense.”
“It was,” Eddie agreed. “I’m just glad everything is ready now.”
Ivy picked up one of the thousand magazines on the table and admired it. The pictures had come out great, exactly how she had hoped.

Her heart swelled with pride as she placed the magazine back on the table. “Thank you all for your support and work, but it s time to go home. We have a party to celebrate.”
“Yeah!” Her teams echoed, clapping their hands.
“We’re done our best, and now it’s up to Lindsey and Joanna to bring this place alive. Time to go Ivy said and began to pack her things.
She said her goodbyes, leaving some staff members behind as she made her way to her car.
“Hey, Bud,” she greeted him as he entered the car. “How are you? We haven’t seen each other since yesterday”
“Yes, ma’am. I’m good, thank you,” Bud replied, starting the car. “Congratulations ma’am.”
“Thank you,” Ivy said, her voice coated with pride as she settled in the chair.
As soon as they got home, Ivy trudged to her room, her body weak from exhaustion. She kept her bag on the bed and went to make a warm bath.
When she returned to the room, her phone buzzed. She reached for it, kicked off her shoes, and sat on the bed
But as she unlocked her phone, her forehead creased. There was a message from her dad.
Curious and slightly wary, she unlocked it.
“Ivy, my beautiful daughter. I would love to have a proper conversation with you.”
She scoffed. “What the hell?”
Yet, her stomach knotted as she read the message again. This wasn’t like her father at all. And that terrified her
