Chapter 145: The Scott Family.
“What the hell?” Ivy gasped as she continued to read the article.
The news had touched every part of their lives. Her mother’s death, the depression, Geo’s existence, her father’s betrayal.
Ivy’s hand shook a little as she left the page and checked another. This one had a whole article on her entire family, including Rita!
She shook her head, sinking into the couch. Silas rushed to her side, his voice and eyes filled with concern. Despite their recent intimacy, her body still reacted to his touch.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his hands possessively on her waist.
“The news…” she said, unable to continue.
“Yes?” he said, his voice gentle.
Ivy looked into his eyes, losing her breath for a moment. “It… was… supposed to be a secret.”
Silas’s brow furrowed. “Okay.”
She sighed and then told him everything. When she was done, she expected him to be mad that she had thought Thomas was responsible for her mother’s death, but instead, he hugged her tightly.
“It’s okay. You didn’t know.”
She settled in his arms until the door opened. They both lifted their heads toward the direction and watched as Uncle Mike and Theresa came in.
“My baby,” Theresa said, running to Ivy’s side. “How are you doing?”
Ivy left Silas’s arms and went to hug Theresa. “I’m good. How are you?”
“I am good too,” Theresa said with a smile. She turned to Silas. “How are you doing man?”
“Good, just there,” Silas said, crossing his legs.
Ivy straightened up and walked to Uncle Mike, giving him a hug too.
“Ivy dearest,” Uncle Mike said with a warm smile.
“Where is Rosie?” Theresa asked as she sat next to Silas.
“She went inside,” Ivy answered, “she needed to rest.”
“I can imagine how she must be feeling,” Uncle Mike said, sitting down too.
“What is Wade saying?” Theresa asked, turning to Silas, a frown drawn on her face.
From everyone’s countenance, Ivy could tell that they were about to get into some serious family talk.
“Excuse me,” she said, heading towards the hallway.
“Where are you going?” Silas asked, titling his head.
“I need to make a call,” she replied.
Their eyes lingered for a little and heat crept up her cheeks as she forced herself to look away.
“Okay,” Silas finally said, his voice gentle.
“Get a room please,” Theresa teased.
Ivy let out a sheepish laugh as she left them. Once she got to the hallway, she pulled out her phone and dialed Cole’s number.
He didn’t pick up on the first ring, so she called his line again. She waited a moment before he finally answered.
“Hey, Vee Vee,” Cole said in a cheerful voice. “How are you?”
“Not good,” Ivy said firmly. “Have you seen the news?”
Confusion colored Cole’s voice. “What news?”
“Somebody leaked Geo’s story to the press,” Ivy said, her voice shaking with disbelief.
“What the fuck?” Cole exclaimed.
“I know right,” she replied, frowning. “Who do you think did it? We are four who knew about it, except if a maid eavesdropped.”
Ivy waited for Cole to make his own list of suspects but instead he went silent. “Cole?”
“I fucked up,” he said, pain filling his voice..
Ivy’s heart pounded at her brother’s tone and before she could control herself, she began to pace round the room. “What

happened? What did you do?”
“I told somebody about our family,” Cole admitted, his voice low with guilt.
Ivy paused in her pace, as she took her finger in her mouth. “I don’t understand, Cole.”
Cole breathed heavily before he spoke. “I told my girlfriend everything.”
Ivy wanted to laugh out loud, not because she thought it was funny, but because she was in disbelief. She had always envied Cole’s wisdom, his ability to fix problems efficiently and quickly.
But right now, he wasn’t sounding the Cole she knew. Besides, since when did he have a girlfriend? She had always known him to be single.
“Fuck! I don’t know how she got the news out there so fast, I just left her place,” Cole explained, but the more he did, the stupider he sounded.
“I am sorry,” he said. “It was… I have no excuse.”
Ivy felt anger surge inside her, but she tried her hardest not to let it control her. “You told someone else our family secret! Do you know what they are saying? How do they see us now?”
They have always prided themselves as a drama–free family. In fact, the one public drama they had undergone was when her father had disowned her and even that had gone south.
“I’m sorry. I’ll fix it.”
“How?” she snapped before she could help herself.
“Just calm down, please,” he said, hanging up before she could respond.
Ivy stomped her foot, furious that this was Cole’s fault. And him having a girlfriend was still surprising and right now, she just wanted to meet that girl and beat the hell out of her.
“Damn!” she groaned, anger moving from her chest to her stomach.
She sighed, running her hand through her hair. She wanted to sit down but she knew she couldn’t go to the living room because of Theresa and others so she went to Thomas’s study.
Inside, her anger melted to a smile as she remembered how Silas had handled her against the table.
Her stomach stirred as the sensation took over her. God, she was in love with Silas. Her cheeks burned at the realization as she settled in Thomas’s couch.
Her thoughts trailed to the first night she had met Silas and moved up to this point.
He loved her shamelessly and she did too, except he didn’t know that yet. She laughed out loud, butterflies flying in her belly.
She closed her eyes, enjoying the emotions until her thoughts drifted to Cole and his silly mistake.
She clenched her fists just as her phone rang. She reached for it and saw it was Geoffrey on the line.
Her stomach knotted as she placed the phone on her ear. “Hey Geo,” she said softly, knowing fully well what he was about to say.
But she waited for him to speak first.
“You’re so bad, Ivy!” Geoffrey snapped, his voice uneven like he had been crying.
She sprang to her feet, shock slamming in her chest. “Oh, Geo. Is-”
“I thought you really cared! All these times! All the push to the detective’s office was for your own good!” Geo’s angry voice broke her heart.
“Calm down, Geo. I will never do anything to harm you,” she said hurriedly, trying to explain herself. “The news-”
“You’re a user! All of you are!” Geo cried. “You found my father just so you could use it as a distraction for your… brother–in- law!”
Ivy blinked, trying to understand how this had anything to do with Thomas. “I don’t get you, Geo.”
“Of course,” he scoffed bitterly. “I know you’ll deny it! Don’t call me even again Ivy!”
Ivy’s heart shattered, pain surging in her chest. “Geo! You can’t-“,
The call ended before she could finish her statement. Ivy placed a hand on her chest, confusion racing through her as she tried to understand everything.
She called Geo’s number, hoping to get a better explanation but to her shock, her number had been blocked. With nobody else to call, she dialed Cole’s number again.
“Hey, Ivy. I know you’re still mad, but I am working-”
“Has Geo called you?” she asked, squeezed her hand together to control the pain in her chest.

“Yes, he has. What happened?”
Ivy’s voice cracked as she told him about the call. “I don’t understand.”
Cole sighed before he spoke. “Mason released a statement about our family. He’s making it seem like we decided to tell our secret just so nobody will talk about Thomas’s case”
“Oh,” she gasped, anger forming in her chest. “What the hell does he want from me?”
It was a rhetorical question, one she wished she had answers to.
“Find a way to explain my story to Geo, tell him I have no idea about Mason’s statement Ivy said, gesturing widy as the spoke.
Cole’s voice dropped. “He… blocked my number.”
Ivy’s knee buckled as she collapsed on the couch. “No!”
“Hey, don’t worry, I will fix it,” Cole said in a reassuring voice but Ivy didn’t believe him. “Let me call back, Ivy please.* “Okay.” Her response was flat as she ended the call.
Her blood curled, her chest building with anger towards Mason. Out of curiosity, she picked up her phone and searched for the latest news on him.
And just as Cole had said, Mason had conducted a interview just to talk about her and her family and how Thomas paid them for the distraction.
Her grip tightened on her phone. She couldn’t just sit and do nothing.
Ivy stood up, determination racing inside her. It was time to face Mason.
