Chapter 139
Lucia walked around the academy grounds looking for Kellan. She had heard from the Sam that he was no longer going to be one of her guards, which apparently, was a big deal. One she still could not understand the reason for.
“hey‘ she called softly, seeing him at the training grounds all alone.
“hi” he said back, giving her a sad smile. She walked to his side, sitting just beside him, not giving any space between them, or at least one little space that seemed to give Kellan ideas
“I am so sorry for Helios acting the way he did. I would try and talk to –”
“it is okay, it is fine” he said cutting her off
“what?” you cannot tell me you would accept this treatment! Helios can not do this!”
“He is one of the founders of this school” he chuckled, but it did not reach his eyes
She was silent for a while, not knowing for a while what to say, so she took her hands and rubbed his thigh encouragingly
“Kellan,” she called out softly, approaching him hesitantly.
“I’m sorry,” she began, her voice trembling slightly. “I never wanted you to be removed from your position. I didn’t know Helios would react that way. I should have been more considerate of how my actions might affect you.”
Kellan’s expression softened further, the tension in his shoulders easing. “Lucia, you don’t have to apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong. I was the one who took you out without permission. I should have known better.”
Lucia shook her head, her eyes pleading. “No, Kellan. You were trying to help me, and I appreciate that more than you know. You understand me in a way that few others do, and I hate that you were punished for it. I honestly feel guilty already, you’re one of my close friends in this place”
Kellan moved a bit closer to her, which was almost impossible as he was almost inside her, his gaze intense. “Lucia, I—*
Before he could finish, Lucia reached out and placed a hand on his arm. The touch was meant to be comforting, but it sent a jolt of electricity through him.
“I just wanted to make things right between us,” Lucia said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kellan’s heart pounded in his chest, his emotions a whirlwind of confusion and longing. In that moment, he saw not just the woman he was sworn to protect, but the woman he had come to care for deeply. Misinterpreting her intent, he leaned in, his lips brushing against hers in a tender, tentative kiss.
Lucia’s yes widened in surprise, and she pulled back quickly, her cheeks flushing with shock. “Kellan, what are you doing?!!!!”
Realization crashed over Kellan like a cold wave. He stepped back, his face pale. “I’m so sorry, Lucia. I thought–I didn’t mean to-”
Lucia placed a hand over her lips, her mind racing. “Kellan, we can’t. I’m with Helios. He’s my mate.”
Kellan felt a deep pang of regret and embarrassment. “I know. I just.. I misread the situation. I thought maybe you felt the same way.”
Lucia’s eyes were filled with confusion and guilt. She felt like she was when prince Adrian kissed her all over again, only this time, she was awake for the feeling of guilt to gnaw at the pits of her stomach. “Kellan, I care about you as my friend. You’re important to me. But my heart belongs to Helios. I’m sorry if I gave you the wrong impression.”

Kellan nodded, his throat tight. “It’s my fault. I let my feelings get the better of me. I promise it won’t happen again.
Lucia reached out and squeezed his hand gently. “We can still be friends, Kellan.” She knew deep down she should have put some space between them, but she did not know how to do it without seeing like an arse
Kellan managed a small smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Thank you, Lucia. I won’t let you down.”
