chapter 40- guardians
I kept mostly to myself after that incident. I was sick, I knew it. that was the only logical reason on why I would have let him he so sultry with me beside a dead body. A dead mutilated body, A body lul mutilated.
I shook my head, remembering how the body lay.
“my lady, the lord requests your presence for lunch” it was the old maid smiling at me as if the knew something that I didn’t.
I shook my head, it was too soon. I needed to get myself together.
“I would not be joining him” I said facing the window for some fresh air. I expected her to leave, to go and relay the message to Helios, but no, she stood there watching and I bet smiling at me.
“you can’t force me to go, I would not go” I said. I would be dragged head first to dinner with that weirdo before I would even ser
foot in his presence.
“and I wouldn’t force you, not even if he wants to have my head.” She chuckled. I turned back to look at her. There was something about her, she didn’t seem like a normal maid. I noticed it from the way she carried herself around other maids. She also talked like she didn’t fear the king, but respected him a lot.
“you don’t fear the king” I said out loud.
She made her way towards the bed patting beside it for me to sit beside her. “you know when Marie told me about you, I didn’t think much about it, but honestly, you are one big ball of surprise” she chuckled.
My
ears picked up at the name. “you knew my ma?” she nodded.
It was like I saw this maid in a different light. “we were the closest. And I must say, she did a wonderful job raising you” I blinked away the tears that gathered.
“she raised a strong independent woman, but sometimes, its okay to grief” she looked at me with what seemed to be pretty
“.. I don’t understand”
“you cannot blame yourself over her death. It was her time to die. Her work was to watch over you till you met thing, and now you have, her work on this realm was over.” The more she spake the less I understood.
“what?”
“have
you ever heard of guardians?” I nodded.
They no longer existed. They protected people of importance and things like that.
“then you understand, she was a guardian, and so am I”
*Lthought they no longer existed, I am not anyone of importance, s why me?” my head was going a mile per minute.
“oh dear, you are far more important and powerful than you think. And when the time is right, you would understand everything that is going on” she lugged me “you have a difficult life a head of you darling, but I know you would be strong enough to fight through it.” she said rubbing my back
All her talk about the future made me scared, I didn’t think I was the right person for the job. Up until a few months ago I could barely shift and now I had this responsibility I didn’t even know abol 17 It was crazy.

“now, I would go tell the king you would rather not be in his presence” she said smiling at me. I forced out a smile to, hiding perfectly that I wanted to jump in a river and drown because of the hole responsibility talk that we just had.
Few hours later, I decided that laying around was not going

The shift this time was swift and painless, I could hardly believe it. the air gently brushing against my fur was something I could get used to. I ran, feeling weightless as I did.
I couldn’t believe that I almost didn’t get to shift because of that fucker. It was maddening.

The wet ground beneath my paw was some kind of motivation to go faster. I could feel the adrenaline course through my veins like I was some kind of kid on substance, it was exhilarating.
I ran for what felt like hours before laying on the floor. There seemed to be magic everywhere, I could feel it. It kept me calm, safe and most of all, it felt familiar. I didn’t want to leave. His magic was more prominent here than it was in the castle, maybe it was because here needed to be heavily warded than the castle,
I didn’t understand why anyone would dare to cross him if he is as powerful as everyone says he is
I took in the air for a few more moments as my stomach found it an appropriate time to reveal that I was yet to have a proper meal today since I had skipped breakfast because of the earlier incident. I made my way back to the outer parts of the forest, looking for where I had kept the clothes.
They were gone. Dread filled me as I imagined myself running through the castle to get to my room butt naked. Or worse, going in wolf form
No one had seen my

are you looking for something, my lady?” a mocking voice said from behind me, causing me to be at alert in an instant.
