chapter 50- heat, ball and marking
“are you ready to go now?” he said this time looking my eyes with a smile. I took a deep breath smiling with a yes falling out of my mouth.
He led me down to the ball room, stopping just before we were near enough that the guards would open the doors.
“if it gets too much for you, just look at me. Nothing else matters.” He said looking straight ahead. I assumed the same posture as he did and walked arm in arm into the ball room. it was quiet, there was not sound, only a few whispers here and there, a few smiles, ones I couldn’t tell if they were fake or not and every other thing that was happening. We stopped half way on the way to
where we were to take our seats.
“and lastly, the host of the event King Helios and his mate” someone announced.
I did not miss the way the whispers increased as he said the last part
“don’t look at them” Helios‘ voice reached me amidst of the murmurs: “Let’s go seat down.”

I walked with him, him leading the way while I followed. Till we reached the chair we were to seat in. the events continued soon after and I found myself again greeting royalties from different places. Mostly kiss asses trying to ask for a favour or two.
Somewhere along the line, we had each gotten a glass of champagne.
I did not miss the way his throat bubbled each and every time he took a sip of his glass. I downed mine in a go to distract myself from how much that, simple act was affecting me.
It also didn’t help that he laughed when the woman he was talking to said something funny. I felt like my body was buzzed.
She touched his hands heartily as she also joined him to laugh. To any other person, it would have seemed like an innocent act but I didn’t care. I wanted to rip her hands off of him.
I was saved from that act, when he suddenly caught sight of someone and excused himself. I was glad because there would have been a bloodbath in this wonderful event and I would not have cared otherwise.
I watched as he left and it was another woman he went to talk to. I didn’t need to get jealous this time, even when he hugged her. The resemblance between them was uncanny and could not be denied.
Somehow, I knew they were related.
“so, how are you settling in the castle?” the woman still beside me said. She sounded sweet, too sweet if that was eyen a thing.
I looked at her not really in the mood to talk to her “oh piss off” I snapped, leaving her to go find another cup of champagne.
The shoes,were starting to hurt since I was walking from one place to the other, greeting people. I didn’t miss how guarded they were around me. Helios was still talking to the woman, he looked genuinely happy and I didn’t want to interrupt. He looked like he needed it.
Finally, I was left alone for a brief moment, one that I truly appreciated. It was starting to get hot and uncomfortable
I soaked up the moment, sipping the wine as I looked at everyone mingling and making connections with each other. “you look beautiful tonight” I froze up as I heard his voice. I had not heard his voice in a long time.
“Kaden” I greeted as civilly as I could without trying to be mad.
“how are you doing princess” he moved to take a strand of hair that was out of place and adjust it.

“fine, for a girl whose mother was killed by the man she thought she loved” he looked around, checking to see if anyone heard.
“I am sorry. I know its no excuse, but my wolf was out of control the” I nodded not ready to talk about it. I did not think I would ever get over it, but for now I had to put my act together, for Helios sake,
“your mate” he started taking the space beside beside me “he doesn’t take much care of you I
moved to create much space as possible but it was futile as there was a wall
I acted like that comment didn’t irritate me. “he takes much better care of me than you ever will” 1.spat. In that moment, my eyes landed on him in the midst of the crowd.
“he is amazing” I added. This time, I really meant it because it was the truth.
“I don’t think he is amazing as he sounds if he lets you roam around like this in the heat.” I didn’t really realise that what I had been feeling was heat. I never actually experienced it since I never had a wolf. Now that it was pointed out, it hit me like a ton
“mind your business” I snapped. In my attempt to move away from him, I had entered a corner in the room. I could still see everything that was happening, but you would have to look for me a bit because of the angle I was in.
“you know you belong to me. And I am not ready.to let you go” I closed my eyes as he was in my personal space.
The necklace thingy better hurried up do its magic‘ I thought to myself as I touched my neck to find it bare. I started to panic. Wasn’t anyone seeing this? I knew I wasn’t completely out of view. I opened my mouth to scream but he placed his hands on my neck.
“any noise from you and I would snap your pretty little neck.” The crazed look in his eyes from months ago was back.
He tightened his hold on my neck as his face got closer and closer.” missed you” he said kissing my marking spot.
“Kaden, you need to let me go, Helios would kill you, I …” my voice was cut off and replaced by a scream as my body registered the familiar pain
It took a while, before everything went black. Last I saw was Helios‘ panicked face before my eyes closed completely.
