Chapter26.
Ivy led me over.
I might as well make the most of it. Even though my chances seemed slim, I still wanted to try my
best.
“Mr. Chou, Mr. Shaw.”
As we approached, Ivy greeted them enthusiastically, introducing me to Xander. “This is my good friend. Sophia Wells. She’s here to admire Mr. Shaw’s charm.”
I felt a deep sense of unease, but my smile was flawless..
Ethan teased, “So that’s why our beautiful Sophia is here to play golf, dressed so beautifully. She’s aiming for Mr. Shaw. Ambitious!”
Ignoring Ethan Chou’s teasing, I greeted him and then turned to Xander, saying seriously, “Mr. Shaw, it’s a pleasure to meet you for the first time.”
Only then did I realize my mistake. My eyes twitched… this damn automatic, formulaic response! My wolf was hopeless, “WE ARE DEAD, DON’T WE?”
“First time?”
Xander’s exceptionally light eyes rested on my face.
“…” Maintaining an outwardly respectful and composed demeanor while inwardly on the verge of collapse, I simply pretended not to understand the implication and forced a smile. “I’m truly happy to meet you.”
Then, I looked at him with a slight nervousness and a hint of pleading.
“Don’t undermine me, okay?”
Xander seemed to understand my expression and gave a subtle smile.“Ms. Wells seems quite happy.
His rich voice had a trailing smile, each word seemed laced with indulgence. His smile made Ethan Chou and Ivy gasp: What? She got him already?
Ivy even gave me a look: I told you to change your clothes, didn’t I? You should always use your
best weapons.
I sighed inwardly,
This wasn’t a compliment; it was clearly sarcasm.
We started playing golf. Xander’s skills were excellent, as were Ethan Chou’s; Ivy and I also took a few swings, but we mostly served as the atmosphere crew.
After a round, we went to a shaded area to rest.
Ivy deliberately dragged Ethan Chou to the club shop to look for a new golf club, creating some alone time for me and Xander.

Xander sat down.
I hastily offered him a bottle of water.
Xander stared at my hand for a few seconds, then, without further comment, took the water. However, he didn’t drink it; he put it back on the table.
I sighed heavily.
No chance?
“Ms. Wells, who I’ve only just met, going to such lengths to get to know me; surely, you’re not just interested in finding out my measurements?” Xander wiped his forehead with a tissue, his movements elegant, his question casual.
Two barbs in one sentence.
I pursed my lips and thought for a moment.“Calling it a ‘first meeting‘ was a slip of the tongue. The last time I asked Liam Chandler about you…was because I accidentally stained your suit and wanted to buy a new one to replace it.
As for wanting to meet you, it’s because I heard you’re hiring a secretary.”
Using “you” when talking about the job and “Mr. Shaw” when addressing him is a sign of intentionality.
Xander put down the tissue and said bluntly, “You’re not suitable.”
He got up and walked towards the forest.
Rejected without even a proper interview; my rebellious spirit kicked in; I got up and followed. My wolf stood up for me, “YOU CLEARLY DID NOTHING WRONG! HE’S JUST MAKING THINGS HARD FOR YOU!”
Just as we were walking, a golf cart with Jason and a client passed by, Tanner also in the cart. Jason stared at that sexy and graceful back, and frowned.
