Chapter71.
My face paled. I suppressed my displeasure, keeping calm as I asked, “Why lock the door? My question…” I paused, glancing at everyone, “…requires confidentiality?”
Lucas immediately chuckled, “No, no, Ms. Wells, don’t worry. Director Young locked the door for no special reason. It’s just that…this matter….isn’t convenient to share.”
“Oh, so there’s a hidden story.”
“Yes, Ms. Wells, you don’t know. The two people you asked about are among the factory’s earliest workers, a married couple. Later, there was a safety accident at the factory, and they both became disabled and unable to work. At the time, to avoid making a big fuss, we discussed compensation with the couple. Interestingly, they proposed receiving sick pay for fifteen years.”
”
…
”
My wolf was almost on the verge of laughing, “YOU ARE SPINNING QUITE A TALE!”
I pursed my lips, silent for a few seconds, then frowned and feigned belief, nodding. I played along, further delving into the conversation, “Then why not explain this to the company?”
“Well, those in the office can’t understand the hardships of workers. If we tell them, a lot of people will be implicated. It’s not easy to find a job. Besides, a lump sum payment and installment payments are almost the same.”
“Director Bennett, I understand personally, but officially, this is against the rules and procedures. And look, you’ve done this, and the uninformed workers think it’s haunted; how frightening.”
“Yes, yes, yes, we know it’s against the rules, so we wanted to discuss with Ms. Wells if we could get a pass this time. This small matter won’t bother Mr. Shaw. He manages such a large group company; it’s truly…heartbreaking to bother him with such trivial things.”
I pretended to consider.
After a while, I said, “Alright, but I want to meet this disabled couple, verify their situation. If there’s no problem, I won’t report it.”
Lucas Bennett was taken aback, “Okay, no problem.”

It was five o’clock in the evening.
Xander finished the summit and attended the host’s dinner party.
He returned to the hotel around eight o’clock.
He had a video conference to attend later that night. He rested briefly in his room, preparing to
start, when Zane rushed in, “Sophia hasn’t returned yet, and her phone is unreachable.”

Xander furrowed his brow, his hand hovering over his laptop, “Didn’t you contact her today?”

“No. We agreed to contact each other if anything came up last night, but she didn’t call me today. I thought she had already returned to the hotel.”
“Call the factory and ask about the situation.”
“Yes.”
Zane immediately contacted them. After the call, his expression worsened, “The factory said she left around one o’clock this afternoon. Considering the time, she should have returned by now.”
Xander’s expression turned colder.
He canceled tonight’s video conference, called Jackson, the deputy general manager in charge of the factory, to go to the factory together, and at the same time asked the factory to check the surveillance footage and search for her in the surrounding area.
Anna Moore, hearing the news, also insisted on going with him.
As Xander and Zane left the hotel, a man in a dark blue shirt with a fierce expression walked towards them, accompanied by several other people.
Xander was looking at the time and didn’t notice, but Zane saw the man and was startled, stepping forward to block the “terrorist” heading towards his boss.
“Mr. Winter!”
The title “Mr. Winter” made Xander look up.
The two men’s eyes met in the night.
“Where’s my partner?” Jason’s every muscle was tense, like a wolf invading another wolf’s territory, full of aggression.
“She’s missing.”
Xander calmly uttered four words.
He was slightly taller than Jason. When he looked back, his slightly drooping peach blossom eyes were calm and indifferent, as if looking at a dog, with an innate sense of superiority.
