Chapter 37
Annalise smiled and said, “Can we find a quiet place to sit down and have a chat?
Giana, knowing I could be quickly taken advantage of, instantly became anxious and said, “Hey, scheming girl, what exactly do you want to do?
Mars
The term made Annalise’s face instantly darken, and she looked at Giana with displeasure. She didn’t expect my best friend to call her that. Giana glared at her, holding her breath.
I stood up, picked up my backpack, and pulled Giana’s hand.“Giana, I’m going out for a while.” Giana’s tone softened.“Katrina, I don’t know what bad intentions she has. So don’t go out with her.”
“Don’t worry!” I comforted, gently patting her arm.
As noon approached, the sky darkened like evening, with dark clouds gathering and a cold wind blowing. The heavy rain was about to come, and the wind filled the city. The location of the Drug Development Institute was quite remote. We walked for more than ten minutes and returned to the vicinity of my residential area and found a quiet café.
We sat in the corner and ordered two cups of coffee. Annalise held the black coffee and slowly savored it while I sat still, quietly gazing at her, waiting for her to speak.
Annalise took a sip of coffee, winced, and set down her cup.“This is nowhere near as good as my maid’s pour–over back home. Harsh, no aftertaste, and completely flavorless.”
“Ms. Perez, you can speak directly,” I remained elegant from beginning to end. My time was precious, and I didn’t want to waste it on trivial things like enjoying coffee.
Annalise remained silent for a few seconds, her eyes filled with sincerity. “Mrs. Barton, Kaleb’s beloved grandpa just passed away. He is feeling sad and not in a good mood. I want to take him on a trip abroad to relax. What do
think?”

I leaned against the back of the chair, my calm face hiding the invisible fist squeezing my chest. Every breath felt like swallowing sand, but I forced a careless shrug. “He can do what he wants. No need to check with me.” My opinion couldn’t change Kaleb’s thoughts.
Annalise explained empathetically, “Mrs. Barton, you are Kaleb’s wife, so I must seek your consent. After all, it is easy for others to misunderstand when a man and a woman travel abroad together.”
I slowly grabbed my pants with a heavy heart. Since Annalise knew that a man and a woman traveling together could easily lead to misunderstandings, she still went ahead and did it, even asking for my consent.
