Chapter 41
There was coffee and snacks on the table, as well as various beautifully packaged gifts. In the room were my father–in–law, Felipe Barton, my stepmother–in–law, Kayleigh Waller, my uncle Jeffrey, my aunt Tanya, my cousin Hana, and Annalise and her father Diego Perez and mother Camille, as well as her grey–haired and kind–hearted grandmother Danna.
I followed Dalia into the room. No one noticed us. Annalise happily described the joy of traveling while distributing gifts.“Kaleb specially chooses this for you.”
Kayleigh was beaming with a smile. As Kaleb’s stepmother, she was delighted to receive a gift personally chosen by her eldest son. She quickly took it and said, “Kaleb and you went on a trip, and you even took the time to pick out a gift for me. I am so happy. Thank both.”

Hana’s face was full of anticipation. “Annalise, any gift for me?”
Annalise indulged in a shallow smile and said, “How could I forget you? Here, take it.” Annalise picked up a large box and handed it to Hana.
Hana smiled even brighter.“Thank
you,
Annalise. Thank you, Kaleb.”
Annalise picked up a delicate box and handed it to Danna. Her smile became restrained, and her gentle voice carried a hint of pleasing. “Kaleb and I carefully select this. I hope you will like it.”
“Thank you,” Danna’s expression was indifferent as she took it with one hand and placed it on the sofa. Then she turned her head to look towards the front door, thinking to herself, “Why isn’t my granddaughter–in–law…”
Before she finished her thoughts, she saw me not far behind her. An instant joyful smile appeared on her face as she stood up and went to greet me, reaching out to shake my extended hand.
“Grandma,” I politely greeted, holding Danna’s withered and fair hand. Looking at the smile on her face, I felt relieved that she had already moved on from the sadness of her grandfather’s passing. As one grew old, they would make with life and death. Everyone had to go someday, so it was easier to accept.

Danna’s eyes were full of doting, and she was very delighted. “Katrina, you’re finally here. Grandma has missed you so much.”
The cozy mood froze the moment I walked in. Except for Danna, everyone’s smiles vanished. Cold stares and impatience took over. I was not good with words. I touched Danna’s hand and asked softly, “Grandma, are you feeling well?”
“Except for some old problems, everything was fine.” Danna held my hand and walked towards the sofa.
I nodded and greeted the people inside. “Hello, Dad, Mom, Jeffrey, Tanya, Diego, Camille.”
Everyone carried themselves with an air of superiority, their faces cold and their eyes tinged with a hint of disdain. They simply nodded.
