Chapter 48
I nodded and continued to eat quietly. Perhaps because of the possible investment, I felt a sense of joy in my heart. I smiled faintly and looked gratefully at Danna. I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
Suddenly, Annalise served a piece of fish to Kaleb, placing it on his plate, which could be seen by me.“Kaleb, your favorite fish belly. Dalia’s cooking is good. Give it a try.”
The smile on my face gradually froze, and my heart sank. My gaze involuntarily shifted towards the radiant smile of Annalise and then towards the unchanged expression of Kaleb.
Annalise said in a close tone, “This dish is a bit far from you. If you want to eat it, just let me know, and I will remove the fish bone and then serve it to you.”
Kaleb didn’t move his fork, nor did he respond. I lowered my head, and put food into my mouth, but had no appetite and found it tasteless. I couldn’t even have a meal in peace. Annalise really knew how to disgust me. Danna gracefully ate her meal, noticing details that others found ordinary and unremarkable. Her wise gaze glanced at Annalise, then at Kaleb, and finally at me. She felt helpless.
Danna pointed to the lamb that was quite far from me.“Kaleb, serve it to your wife. She needs nutrition.” Danna’s words made me panic, and I quickly picked up a slice of cucumber and put it on my plate, saying, “No need. I can do it myself.”
Kaleb remained silent, picked up the fork, gently wiped it with a clean tissue, extended his hand, and placed a piece of chicken leg meat onto my plate. I felt inexplicably nervous in my heart and politely and awkwardly whispered, “Thank you.”
Danna continued to point at the stewed mutton, “This stewed mutton in front of me is very flavorful. I haven’t seen her pick it up.”
I had just wanted to explain. Kaleb spoke first, “Grandma, she doesn’t like the gamey taste of mutton.” “Oh, I see now!” Danna smiled.“Grandma remembers too.”
Annalise’s face darkened, and she secretly glanced at my face, her eyes filled with displeasure. I lowered my head and silently began to eat the chicken that Kaleb had handed me. I thought it was just an action to satisfy Danna’s wishes but not a symbol of care. Remembering my dietary preferences was just because his memory was good, and it could not be considered as caring for me either. Although they were all fake, I couldn’t help but have a slight expectation.
During this meal, Kaleb did not touch the fish belly on his plate.
