I put on the helmet and got on Roy’s motorcycle. The cool motorcycle zoomed past Kaleb’s car. In the car, Kaleb’s face was gloomy, his gaze fixed on the gradually receding figure of the motorcycle. A hint of imperceptible anger flashed in his eyes, as he slowly clenched his hand on the steering wheel, causing his knuckles to turn white. Annalise whispered in a complaint, “Doesn’t Katrina see that Roy likes her? She would rather ride on Roy’s motorcycle than let you give her a ride, and she doesn’t even try to hide it. What is she thinking?”
Kaleb started the car, stepped on the accelerator, caught up with the motorcycle, and sped away, swiftly disappearing.
In Lakeside Estates, I ran up to the fourth floor. I could hear my sister–in–law’s sharp and sarcastic insults through the door.
“You were just a loser. I’ve been married to you for so many years through hardships. My best friend’s husband has already bought a million–dollar luxury car, while you’ve been driving this old car for seven or eight years without money to replace it. And this rundown neighborhood doesn’t even have an elevator. I have to climb four floors every day with our son. My best friend’s husband has already bought a villa in the city center. And what about you? You just stay at that fruit shop, never thinking about making more money.
“My best friend has all the latest Chanel products, while I don’t even have a decent piece of clothing, and the bag I carry is an outdated model from a few years ago.
“I have had enough of these tough days. How dare you hide money to buy gifts for your sister? If you care so much about her, go live with her! I’m done serving you!”
I took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. Then, the door opened. What came into sight was my brother, Terry Larson’s simple and honest face, with a look of sadness in his eyes. When he saw me, he appeared slightly flustered and asked, “Katrina, why did you come?” The word “Katrina” was followed by a loud slamming of the door coming from inside.
“Bang!” The door was slammed shut, and the whole apartment felt a slight tremor. Terry trembled in fear and quickly went out, holding my hand.“Katrina, you go home first, and I will come to see you when I have time.” My older brother had always been honest. Seeing his exhausted and haggard expression, I couldn’t help but feel heartbroken, my eyes becoming moist.“Terry, it was Mom who asked me to come over. She said that Laci had gone mad again. She argued with you every day. And today, she even threatened divorce?”
