Chapter 66
The office was empty and quiet, and I felt a bit down, my heart pounding. My phone had a 3% battery, but I hesitated to call Kaleb. By the time the phone died, I hadn’t called. Time felt like a heavy storm in my heart, with the wind cold, the rain chilly, and the sky dark, making me feel a bit lost. I waited an hour. That was my limit.
I picked up my bag and left. I reached the elevator and pressed the button. The doors opened immediately. Two renovation workers inside stepped back as I entered, leaning against the wall, feeling completely drained of energy. Behind me, the workers whispered.
“Should have recorded it to avoid blame.”
“Who thought she’d step on that nailed board? It’s Barton Group’s fault, not ours.”
“People are weird these days.”
“She must be crazy.”
The elevator door opened. The workers came out from behind me and walked away. I got off the elevator, walked up to the reception desk, and asked in a weak voice, “Hi, can you tell me if Mr. Barton has left?”
The receptionist replied, “Yes, an hour ago, Mr. Barton left with Ms. Perez. She had an injury on her foot, and there were blood drops all over the place.”
I understood from the elevator talk and said, “Thank you.”
Outside, the sun was bright, but I felt uneasy in my heart as I walked to the subway with heavy steps. People moved on the streets, but the city’s noise didn’t affect me. My heart ached again. Since falling for Kaleb, I experienced a kind of ache that wasn’t intense; it was a faint dampness gradually eroding my heart, giving me the feeling that I was barely holding on.
I bought a subway ticket with cash. The air conditioning felt cold. I hugged myself and leaned against the door. For over an hour, my mind was in a fog, longing for a warm shoulder to lean on. But there was none.
In the hospital.
Diego and Patricia rushed to the hospital, looking worried.
Kaleb said, “Mr. Perez, Annalise is inside for a brain MRI.”
Patricia’s face turned pale and her voice shook, “What happened to Annalise?”
Diego demanded angrily, “My daughter was perfectly fine when she went to your company. How did this happen?”
