He left with his group. The salesperson sighed in relief. Giana, smiling, walked up to me and gave me a thumbs–up. I couldn’t smile. I felt this was just the start, and future challenges would be more daunting.
The next day, the fire escape clutter was cleared. The tax audit found no issues. The lawsuit from the Animal Protection Association was baseless. I wasn’t worried. There were months until August. I could apply to the government for a new lab.
Night deepened. The moonlight was beautiful, and the spring breeze fluttered the light curtains. In the bright, tidy living room, after my
bath and drying my hair, I sat to analyze research data. The wall clock showed 9:05 PM, and the door opened. I glanced up from the papers.
Kaleb swapped his shoes and entered. He looked weary, his strides labored. Removing his jacket and loosening his tie, he stared intently at me. We exchanged glances but couldn’t decipher each other’s minds. I didn’t speak, nor did he seem inclined to talk. He headed directly to the room.
I grabbed the contract and stood quickly. “Kaleb.”
He paused, his back still facing me. Approaching him, I held out the contract. “I signed the contracts you left this morning, Please come over and sign them.”
Kaleb sighed, turned to me, glanced at the contracts, and said, “I don’t want to talk about this right now.”
My heart ached sharply. It meant the partnership was canceled. Kaleb wouldn’t fund my company. It was bitterly ironic.
“Okay,” I didn’t try to save it and walked to my room.
Suddenly, a hand gripped my wrist, stopping me. Warmth spread from my wrist, and I stiffened. I looked at my wrist. My eyes followed Kaleb’s arm up to his dark eyes, stirring my heart.
Kaleb frowned slightly.“Won’t you ask why?
