CHAPTER 13
I went to take a shower and stood in front of the mirror, wearing a towel while I styled my hair
and applied my makeup. After that, I walked into my bedroom and changed into the dark blue.
sleeveless jeweled thigh–length dress and the black strappy high heels that Kai had bought for me. I also grabbed a dark blue bolero jacket that I managed to borrow from Harper earlier in
the afternoon, and I put on black stockings under the dress to keep my legs covered.
I had straightened my hair again for the night, and my makeup was quite neutral. I preferred
not to wear bright colors. Instead, I opted for lighter shades, as I always did.
I then put on the necklace and earrings that he had sent along with the dress.
At exactly 7 PM, someone knocked on the door. I opened it to find Kai standing there in a suit.
“Wow. You look beautiful,” he said.
“Thanks. You don’t look too bad yourself,” I replied, feeling a bit embarrassed.
“Come on. I have a reservation,” he said, extending his arm out to me.
We went downstairs, and I assumed we would be leaving through the back door like I always
did, but that wasn’t the case this time.
Kai escorted me through the packhouse, where a lot of people were hanging around and
watching us, including Landon.
When we reached the front door, Kai opened it for me and then opened the car door of his
Chevy Camaro that was waiting outside.
“I know we can’t go anywhere in the pack, so I’ve made reservations at a town down the road,”
he said,
“A human town?” I asked, surprised.
“Yeah,” he replied, looking at me with confusion.
“I was just talking to Harper about that today. I’ve never been to a human town before,” I
explained.
“Well, I’m honored to be the first to take you there,” he said with a smile.
It took about 20 minutes to reach the town once we left Landon’s territory. Kai drove through
the middle of town until he pulled up outside a nice–looking restaurant.
As soon as we walked inside, the hostess seated us in a quieter section at the back of the

room.

I kept looking around, feeling nervous and out of place. I had never been to a restaurant before,
at least not one this fancy.
Kai pulled my chair out for me, and he was being a real gentleman. I noticed many people
looking at us from around the restaurant, so I lowered my head to study the menu.
“Everyone’s staring,” I said.
“Yeah. I guess they are,” he replied, glancing around.
“They probably don’t know why you’re here with someone like me,” I said softly.
“Arabella, they’re staring at you, not me. You look really beautiful tonight,” he said, making me
feel embarrassed again.
“No, I don’t,” I insisted.
“If
you say so, but I know what I see,” he countered.
As we started going over the menu, I realized that Kai had been here before, but it had only
been a couple of times, so he didn’t remember what they served.
We were chatting back and forth when I caught a familiar scent. Just then, Hayden
approached us, smiling.
“Hey, guys. I didn’t know you were here,” he said, walking over with a young woman.
“Must be a coincidence,” Kai said sourly.
“Not really. I love this restaurant. Oh, Arabella, this is Addison–Addy–my little sister,” Hayden introduced.
“Oh, hi. It’s really nice to meet you,” I said.
“It’s nice to meet you too,” Addy replied.
“I suggest the pasta; it’s delicious here,” Hayden said, leaning over to show me the item on the
menu.
“Yeah, I love pasta,” I agreed.
“Well, if that’s all you want, we were in the middle of something” Kai snapped at Hayden.
“Actually, I was thinking it was a little crowded in here tonight. Do you mind if we join you?” Hayden asked.
“That’s a great idea! I haven’t seen Kai in ages. It’ll be great to catch up,” Addy added.

I looked at Kai, and he definitely didn’t seem happy about the idea. But when he noticed me looking at him, he forced a smile.
“Sure, I guess,” I stuttered. I didn’t really know what to say; I didn’t want to say no to the Beta.
So, Hayden pushed a table up against ours, sitting next to me while Addy took the seat next to
Kai.
“So, Kai, you never called me back. You said you would,” Addy said.
“What? When did I say that?” Kai asked, looking confused.
“The last time you brought me here. You took me home, and we had a great time, but you
never called me back,” Addy replied, staring directly at Kai.
Kai glanced at me, clearly nervous. He obviously hadn’t expected Addy to bring that up.
“Well, I didn’t think we had the chemistry,” Kai said, turning his attention back to the menu.
“I bet that’s what it is. You have to watch out for him. He never calls anyone back in the
morning,” Hayden joked, pretending to tease Kai. But I could tell there was more to it than just
that.
The longer I sat there, the more uncomfortable I felt. When the waitress finally came over, I
was relieved.
“So, what can I get you to eat?” she asked.
“You know what? I think this was a mistake. I’m sorry. I can find my own way home,” I said,
standing up.
I left the restaurant quickly and stepped out into the crisp air, starting to run down the
footpath, which wasn’t easy in these heels. I just didn’t want them to catch up to me. There was definitely something going on between them, and I didn’t want to be caught in the middle
of it.
I remembered the route Kai had taken to the restaurant and retraced my steps back to the
highway, heading back to the pack. Suddenly, I noticed a black Escalade speeding past me. It
slammed on its brakes as soon as it passed, causing me to turn around and look at it.
The vehicle then turned around in the middle of the road and slowly approached me from
behind. Causing me to become really hesitant and nervous.
When the car came to a complete stop, I was surprised to see Landon step out of the driver’s
seat.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“It’s not important. Just get in,” he replied.

I walked over to the car, climbed into the passenger seat, and he started driving back toward
the pack.
“How did you know I was walking back?” I inquired.
“Kai called me,” he answered.
“Why did you care?” I pressed.
“I said it’s not important,” he reiterated.
I nodded and accepted his response, even though I sensed there was more to it. He clearly
wasn’t going to reveal the truth.
So, I remained quiet for the rest of the ride, looking out the window at the scenery passing by.
