CHAPTER 20

Cooper had been speeding down the highway for a long time while I constantly kept an eye on the road behind us. Eventually, he pulled off and drove down another road.
We must have been on that road for a couple of more hours, passing through several small towns. Finally, he pulled up at a motel in the last town we encountered. He got out and went to
the office to book a room.
After securing our accommodations, he took me to our room, closed the door, and locked it. By that point, it was already dark. We had been traveling all day and had a long distance to go to reach Landon’s pack, as well as being far from Vincent’s pack.
“Cooper, do you even have a plan?” I asked.
“Yeah, I have a plan,” he replied, looking out the window.
“No one followed us. I’d be able to pick them up if they did,” I said.
“So, the pills haven’t completely suppressed your fae side,” he noted. I smirked at him.
“They worked at first. But Vincent didn’t realize that as I got older and bigger, he would need to change the dosage. So now, they barely do anything,” I explained, sitting on the bed.
He shook his head while smirking. “Trust you to keep that to yourself and not tell anyone.”
“People still can’t sense my wolf, and they can’t tell that I’m a half–breed. However, the wolfsbane actually manifests in my canines and claws. So, the pills have become effective during a fight. I can do some things as a fae, but not everything. I keep taking them because I’m scared of the power I might gain if I stop. I have no idea how much power I would actually
have,” I continued.
“Yeah, that’s why we’re staying here tonight, and I’m taking you to a cabin tomorrow. It’s by a lake, and there are no neighbors. More importantly, there are no wolf packs nearby,” he said.
“I have a couple of questions about that. Who owns the place, and why are we going there?” I
asked.
“I own the place, but I put it in someone else’s name so no one knows it’s mine. We’re going there because you don’t have any pills, and it’s time you let the fae side of you out to show people what you can really do,” Cooper replied.
I stared at him for a moment before looking down at the floor. “What’s wrong?” He asked, concerned. “Vincent was wrong to give you those pills in the first place. He doesn’t know that

you’re half fae. He gave you those pills to keep your wolf from coming out,” Cooper said.

“I know that the first time I shifted, she attacked him. He swore it would never happen again,” I
said.
“So, what’s the problem?” he asked.
“It’s going to hurt,” I replied.
“What’s going to hurt? You’ll feel your powers coming in, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.
“I know, but that’s not what I’m talking about. The pills have been my protection against
Landon,” I explained.
“I don’t understand,” he said.
“Landon thinks I don’t have a wolf. He can’t sense her. He believes I’m spying on his pack for
Vincent, and he’s been sleeping with everything that moves since we got married,” I clarified.
“Yeah, I saw that when I noticed that woman today,” he responded.
“Cooper, please try to understand what I’m telling you. It’s going to hurt when I come off these
pills because I will feel every time Landon was with someone else,” I said.
“Infidelity. Oh my goddess, those pills were your armor against the pain,” Cooper said, his eyes
reflecting a mix of concern and understanding.
“Exactly,” I replied, the weight of my hidden truth settling heavily in the air between us.
“Who else knows that Landon is your mate?” he pressed, his voice dropping to a whisper, as if
afraid the walls themselves might overhear.
“No one. That’s why I’ve kept my distance from him, tried to build a wall of indifference. I acted as if his presence didn’t rattle me, even though it cut through me like a knife,” I explained, my
heart racing at the memory of those agonizing moments.
“Why didn’t you ever tell him? Why didn’t you stop taking the pills?” he asked, his brow
furrowed with genuine concern.
“Because Landon hates those who aren’t like him. Other species. I was scared that if he discovered the truth, he would banish me back to Vincent, back to a life where I felt even more imprisoned,” I confessed, a cold shiver running down my spine at the thought.
“The moment you get rid of those pills, your wolf will come out, and those deep scars will disappear. Don’t you want that?” he asked, his voice laced with hope.
“Of course I do. More than anything, I want Meadow to reclaim my strength and fix what

Vincent tried to break. But it was never as simple as that,” I replied, my voice tinged with

“I understand. But we’re going to stick to my plan,” he declared firmly, determination lighting up his expression. “We’ll go to the cabin in the woods, and there, we’ll stay until you can get control of your powers and you can be yourself.”
I nodded, realizing that it was finally time to stop pretending and hiding who I truly am. If
Landon wants to reject me for being who I am, then that’s his choice. He hasn’t done anything
to prove he’s a good guy anyway.
Cooper left to grab some food while I stayed in the motel room, making sure I wasn’t seen by
anyone. When he returned, he had also picked up some new clothes in town.
We had dinner, and then I took a shower and changed into a short–sleeve shirt and tracksuit
pants. Cooper also bought a pack of cigarettes, and he made sure there was no one outside
before we went out to smoke.
“This is the first cigarette I’ve had in weeks. I couldn’t smoke around Landon,” I said.
“Yeah, that guy is a real buzzkill,” Cooper replied, and I scoffed.
“Not to the women at the brothel,” I added.
“I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner,” he said.
“It’s only been a couple of weeks. Why would you?” I asked.
“Well, I got a call while I was out. Vincent’s warriors and Landon’s warriors are looking for us.
Landon wants my head on a stick.” Cooper said.
“So does Vincent. They might not have mentioned it over the phone, but he does,” I said.
“། guess, but I don’t care. We’re going through with this, and it’s too late to turn back now,” he
responded.
“True,” I agreed.
I noticed that Cooper occasionally glanced down at the scars on my arms, but he quickly looked away. It seemed like he wanted to see them, but he was aware that I didn’t want him
- to. So, he restrained himself from doing so.
When we went back inside, Cooper went to take a shower. Since we only had one bed in the room, I climbed in, turned off the lamp, and settled down. Cooper was going to take the floor but I told him that we were both adults. It didn’t matter if we slept in the same bed.

“Can I ask you something?” Cooper asked as he got comfortable next to me.
“Sure,” I replied.
“Are you the savior?” he asked.
“Why do you ask?” I questioned.

“You told me that you still have some fae powers. That would explain how the savior moves in
and out without anyone seeing who it is,” he explained.
“Maybe,” I answered, and he started laughing.
“I knew it!” he exclaimed.
