After hesitating for a while, Claire opened their chat box and sent him a message:
[Zane, what are you busy with? Why aren’t you responding to my messages?]
DING! A notification chimed inside the private room
Zane glanced at his phone–frowned slightly–then locked the screen without responding
Emma, sitting beside him, saw the message and asked casually
“Was that Claire? Why aren’t you replying?”
He kissed her forehead, then took the baby from her arms. His voice ley:
“Replying to her would be a waste of time.”

Though he didn’t finish his sentence, Claire knew what he was asking.
She pressed her lips together, silent. Instead of answering, she hailed a taxi and left.
In the backseat, watching the city blur past, the truth finally crystallized-
The man she had loved for ten years had never truly liked her.
Zane had lied. Emma had lied.
Thought of this, tears streaked her cheeks–even the taxi driver kept glancing at her in the
rearview mirror.
Just then, her phone rang with the personalized ringtone she had set for Zane.
“Claire, are you back?” His voice was calm, betraying nothing.
She wiped her tears, steadying her voice, “Mn, school break.”
“Why didn’t you tell me in advance? I could have picked you up.”
“I didn’t want to bother you since you’re busy with work.”
Zane fell silent for a moment, then asked:
“My friend just said he ran into you at Grand Plaza Hotel. Why were you there?”
Claire’s fingers tightened around her phone.
For some reason, she didn’t want to expose his lies yet, so she said:
“Meeting a friend.”
Claire thought that if he tell her the truth now, she would forgive his deception and just continue to be true siblings with him.
But reality still disappointed her.
She heard his relieved exhale through the phone. “Go home first. I’m tied up with something and can’t get away. I’ll come find you at home when I’m done.”

With that, he hung up.
It wasn’t until evening that Zane hurried home.
He had changed out of the formal wear he’d worn to the celebration, but the scent of baby formula clung to him.
Noticing Claire stare, Zane hurriedly smiled and said:
“Claire, why are you staring at me like that? Missed me that much in just a year?”
“How long is your break? When do you have to go back?”
Hearing Zane’s questions, Claire clenched her fists.
So eager for her to go?
Was he so afraid of she would ruin his happy family with Emma?
