Chapter 3
Claire was about to speak when her eyes suddenly fell on Zane’s wrist.
Despite hidden partly by his watch, she could see it–a red rose tattoo.
Rose, Emma’s nickname–she used it for all her social media accounts.
Every question Claire had died in her throat.
The tattoo killed every last delusion.
Before she left the country, he was the one who’d promised her.
He kissed her first, blurring the line between them.
He drunkenly confessed, “I’ve never felt this way about anyone else.”
He scared off every guy who dared get close to her.
He made her fall–then had the audacity to call it her own fault.
Claire looked into Zane’s eyes and said seriously:
“Zane, we grew up together. You must know how I feel about you.”
He brushed it off with a laugh: “Claire, don’t worry, I’ll wait for you to come back.”
She almost choked. Still lying? Now?
Noticing something off about Claire’s mood, Zane’s eyes darkened, and his voice became noticeably tense:
“Claire, what’s wrong?”
Claire just lowered her eyes and shook her head.
“Nothing, I’m just too happy.”

Zane finally relaxed and tugged her toward the door. “That’s good. I’ll take you out for dinner now to welcome
you back.”
Claire habitually opened the front passenger door, only to find diapers, a doll, and a woman’s handbag on the seat.
She recognized the handbag immediately–the birthday gift she had given Emma last year.
Zane hurriedly explained: “My friend borrowed my car yesterday. Must’ve left his kid’s
stuff. Just sit in the back today?”
Claire said nothing, just closed the passenger door and sat in the back.
After getting in, Zane carefully adjusted the doll’s position.
After all, it was his daughter’s favorite toy.
As the car started moving, Claire didn’t constantly try to make conversation with Zane as
she used to.
She just silently looked out the window.
She couldn’t understand how Zane could say he liked her while marrying someone else and having a child.
Yet Zane kept talking–suddenly the doting “big brother“-asking about her life abroad, her classes, if anyone messed with her.
In the past, this would’ve melted her. Now? She just wanted him to tell her the truth.
Claire responded to Zane’s words halfheartedly.
Then-“Almost forgot!“–he tossed her a tin of mints from the glovebox. “For your car sickness. I know you love these.”
Claire froze.
She didn’t get car sick.
She also didn’t like mint candies at all–they made her sneeze uncontrollably.

Zane had once specifically told her:
“I read online that sneezing from mint means you’re allergic to it. You should never eat
mint candies, and I’ll remember that for you.”
Now he’d mixed her up with Emma.
The person who got car sick was Emma.
The person who liked mint candies was also Emma.
