Chapter 4
Claire found it ridiculous.
“Thanks, but no thanks. I don’t like mint candies.”
Zane frowned slightly.
“What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you used to like mint candies?”
Zane might have noticed something off about Claire’s mood, but he couldn’t be bothered to dig deeper.
After all, in his relationship with Claire, he was the one in control.
Claire didn’t want to talk to Zane, so she closed her eyes and pretended to sleep.
At the restaurant, Zane didn’t even give her the menu
ordering several dishes on his own.
The food arrived quickly.
Zane placed a shrimp in Claire’s plate.
“Eat more. You must have missed home cooking while abroad, huh? Lordered all your favorites today.”
Claire stared at the shrimp, froze,
201
She was allergic to shrimp–even the slightest contact would cause her to break out in hives.
The other dishes? All spicy.
Her stomach had always been sensitive, so she never ate spicy food.
In the past, when they ate qut together, Zane would specifically instruct the servers not to add any spice to their food.
But now?

Everything had changed.
Zane didn’t notice anything unusual about Claire and continued eating while asking:
“By the way, when are you heading back?“”
“Dad mentioned your professor values you highly and wants you to continue your advanced studies. I think it’s a good opportunity, you should seriously consider it.”
Her hand, reaching for plain rice, suddenly paused.
Did he really want her to stay abroad forever, never to return?
Claire’s eyes stung, but she forced back the tears.
“In a couple of days I’ll…”
Before she could finish, Zane’s phone rang.
= = = = = =
The screen flashed: Wife.
Zane instinctively glanced at Claire across the table, his eyes
reflecting panic.
Claire pretended not to notice, concentrating on eating her plain rice.
Only then did he answer the phone, keeping his voice very low.
She only caught his last words: “I’ll be right back.”
After hanging up, Zane looked apologetically at Claire:
العالم
“Something came up at work. I need to go back. Claire, enjoy your meal. Tomorrow I’ll invite some friends for a party with you.”
Without waiting for her response, he stood up and left.
Watching his retreating figure, Claire felt as if a sword had pierced her heart.
The dream was over, and her heart had finally died.
