Chapter 6
The next day, Claire had planned to go directly to the Gray family mansion, but Zane insisted she join his “welcome back” party first.
Left with no choice, to avoid arousing Zane’s suspicion, Claire agreed to go to the address
Zane sent first.
The moment she stepped into the private room, the chatter died.
She heard someone whisper:
“Why is Claire here?”
“Didn’t Zane say this gathering was to figure out how to send her back abroad, so she wouldn’t ruin his and Emma’s wedding?”
Their voices were low, but in the sudden hush, every word stabbed clear.
After an awkward moment, someone broke the silence:
“Claire, it’s rare for you to be back. Come sit down!”
The speaker was considered both Claire and Zane’s childhood friend
He’d always had a good relationship with Claire, and they’d kept in touch over the past year and a half.
Yet when it came to Zane’s lies, he’d played along.
Claire suppressed her emotions and walked over to sit down.
Shortly after, Zane arrived with Emma.
Seeing them, everyone’s smiles grew brighter, and several girls immediately surrounded
Emma.
Claire could clearly feel the difference in how they treated her versus Emma.

But it was she who was actually their friend. Emma only knew these people because of her.
As emotions welled up in her chest, she made an excuse and went to the restroom.
But she didn’t expect Emma to follow her out.
“Did you see the message I sent you yesterday?”
Emma spoke with certainty:
“Claire, Zane never loved you. Let him go!”
“Didn’t you once say you wanted to be my child’s godmother? For your goddaughter to have
a happy family, you should be willing to make some sacrifices.”
Before Claire could react, she watched as Emma suddenly messed up her own hair, then slapped herself hard across the face, and even fell to the ground.
After doing all this,
“Claire, I know you
looked up at Claire with a pitiful expression:
resent me, but Zane and I truly love each other.”
“You can hit me, but please don’t destroy my family. My daughter is so young, she can’t be
without a father!”
Just as she finished speaking, the door was forcefully pushed open by Zane.
Seeing the situation, he roughly
shed Claire aside, then carefully helped Emma up.
“Claire Simpson, how dare you hit Emma!”
Emma shrank into Zane’s arms, looking vulnerable:
“Zane, don’t blame her. It’s my fault.”
“I told her about us being together. She just… lost control.”
Hearing this, Zane’s anger/intensified.
“Claire, what business is it of yours if Emma and I are together? You’re nothing to me, so

why are you interfering?”
“I’ve tolerated your tantrums before, but now you’ve hurt Emma. Apologize immediately!”
Claire stared in disbelief at them.
One was the man she once loved most.
One was her once best friend.
Not only did they feel no guilt toward her, but they actually had the audacity to question
her.
If they truly liked each other, they could have just told her directly, and she would have
wished them well.
But why did they have to hurt her like this?
Claire gazed coldly at Zane, her voice icy:
“I didn’t lay a finger on her.”
But Zane’s face twisted in fury, his voice rising to a shout:
“I SAW IT WITH MY OWN EYES! How dare you lie to my face?!”
“Only you two were here. Did Emma slap herself?”
Emma tugged at Zane’s sleeve, pretending to be considerate:
“Zane, it’s okay. I’m fine… and I’m sure Claire didn’t mean it…”
“No, she must apologize to you! I’ve put up with her nonsense for years. Let’s just stop
pretending now!”
Watching their coordinated performance, Claire found it ridiculous.

unfathomable thing of all.
Not wanting to continue this charade with them, Claire took a deep breath and said slowly:
“Fine, I apologize.”
“Emma, I’m sorry.”
But Zane wasn’t about to let Claire off so easily, his voice cold:
“Emma is my fiancée and the mother of my child. I won’t let her suffer any grievance.”
“Do you think a simple sorry is enough? KNEEL DOWN!”
