Claire hadn’t lied to Mr. Gray–she really was extremely busy.
During the day at the university, she was occupied with various research projects.
In the evenings after returning home, she spent time with Jackson.
So she quickly put Zane’s wedding out of her mind.
What Claire didn’t know was that because of her absence, Zane had thrown a tantrum at
his wedding.
Because someone mentioned Claire at the reception.

“Can you believe it? Claire really didn’t come to disrupt Mr. Gray’s wedding. She didn’t even return to the country.”
“Do you think she’s finally given up?”
“Didn’t Zane say she’s playing hard to get? Probably sitting by her phone right now, waiting for him to come crawling back!”
Laughter erupted around them–until an uneasy voice cut in:
“I think Claire is serious this time.”

“Have you seen her social media? Looks like she has a new boyfriend.”
Zane overheard this and immediately grabbed the person by the collar:
“What did you just say? Who has a new boyfriend?”
The person trembled, “C…Claire has a new boyfriend. H–Here, look-”
The man took out his phone and opened Claire’s social media page.

Zane stared intently at the two people kissing in the photo.
He didn’t even hear Emma repeatedly calling his name beside him.
It took Mr. Gray’s intervention to finally calm the situation.
About a month later, Claire suddenly received a call from a friend back home.
“Claire, tomorrow is Zane’s birthday. Are you coming back to see him?”
“After all, you’ve been by his side for every birthday. This year shouldn’t be an exception, right?”
When her friend mentioned it, Claire suddenly remembered that Zane’s birthday was indeed approaching.
In previous years, she would prepare his birthday gifts two or three months in advance.
But this year, if not for this call, she would have completely forgotten about Zane’s birthday.
But they clearly knew that she and Zane had gone their separate ways.
So why were they calling to ask her to return for his birthday?

“Oh, I forgot. I just-”
CRASH!
Before Claire could finish, she heard glass shattering on the other end of the line.
Then came Zane’s furious voice:
“Claire, you actually forgot my birthday!”
Claire questioned in response, “…Should I remember the birthday of a married man?”
Zane was momentarily speechless, then retorted;
“I’m your brother! Shouldn’t a sister remember her brother’s birthday?”

Now Claire was truly at a loss for words.
“Zane, you know better than anyone that we’re only ‘siblings‘ in name.”
“And honestly? You’re being hypocritical.”
“You told me to stay out of your life. I obeyed. So what’s this tantrum about?”
“You have a wife and child now. For your birthday, you should be with them, not calling your ‘sister‘ who has no blood relation to you. I have no interest in being the other woman.”
Zane fell silent, not saying another word.
Claire sighed softly.
Considering he had helped her in the past, she offered one last piece of advice:
“Since you’re married and have a child, you should focus on building a life with them.”
“I’m getting married soon too. I hope we won’t need to be in contact anymore unless absolutely necessary.”
