“Clara, are you insane?”
“Why didn’t you use protection?!”
I closed my eyes.
“What could I do? I’ve been allergic to all rubber products since I was a kid.”
“Ugh, right, but–but didn’t you take the pill?”
“It happened so suddenly. I was panicking and completely forgot. I literally just
remembered now.”
“How many times did you do it?”
“Is that really important?”
“Very important!”
I grabbed a pillow and pressed it over my face.
After a long moment, I finally admitted,
“I think it was three times.”
Bree shrieked again.
“Ugh! Only three times?! He looked so intense–shouldn’t it have been like seven or eight
times in one night?”
“BREE!”
I was about to lose my mind.
“That’s not the point right now. What am I supposed to do?”
“Get a pregnancy test and check.”

“And if I am pregnant, then what?”
“Clara Ward, don’t you dare do anything stupid. He’s just a male model! If you’re pregnant, you need to terminate it immediately!”
My scalp tingléd with anxiety.
I wanted to interrupt her, to tell her that he wasn’t a male model.
He was Evan Thorne, heir to the Thorne fortune.
But thinking about Bree’s big mouth and even bigger voice, I immediately abandoned the idea.
“I know. I’ll go buy a test right away.”
But before I could get a test, I started feeling uncomfortable, with a dull ache in my lower abdomen.
A quick trip to the bathroom confirmed some light spotting.
Counting back, my period wasn’t due for another week, so this must be early.
My heart finally dropped back into my stomach-
like a rock settling at the bottom of a well, all the tension draining out with it.
At that exact moment, Julian had apparently flown in from L.A to New York.
My parents sent the family driver to bring me home.
I didn’t want to go back, but I figured I needed closure with Julian anyway.
So I packed my things and got in the car.
Surprisingly, this was actually Julian’s first visit to our home.
Even our engagement ceremony had been held in L.A.

But Julian had pulled out all the stops for this visit.
He’d even brought two cars full of extremely expensive gifts.
My parents were beaming with delight.
Even my grandfather, who had been recuperating in the countryside, rushed back for the
occasion.
My car had barely stopped when Julian eagerly came out to greet me.
Mom couldn’t stop smiling.
“Clara, look at yourself. Being so immature and throwing a tantrum with Julian, and here he is still defending you.”
“Mrs. Ward, please don’t blame Clara. I was the one who acted foolishly and upset her. She has every right to be angry.”
My dad immediately jumped in:
“Young men will be young men! Men like to have a bit of fun now and then. Clara just needs to be more understanding and considerate of you.”
“It’s all my fault,” Julian said, looking at me with tenderness in his eyes.
“Clara, I’m sorry. I’m apologizing to you. Please don’t be angry anymore, okay?”
