Chapter 5
I thought I was seeing things.
But no, Spencer had actually pulled over on the freeway.
He got out of his car and started walking toward me.
He knocked on the cab window, lips moving fast.
But with the windows up, I couldn’t hear a word.
The driver looked a little confused.
“Hey, want me to roll the window down so you two can talk?”
“Seems dangerous to be stopped like this on the freeway.”
I shook
my head.
“No. Don’t bother with him.”
Spencer kept pounding on the glass, loud enough to echo,
but I didn’t spare him even a glance.
The whole ridiculous scene dragged on
until the highway patrol showed up and took him away.
Only then did I dare peek out from behind the line of stalled cars,
watching as he was forced back toward his car.
His face, even through the curtain of rain,
was etched with desperation.
So he could be frantic over me.

But I’d already given him a chance.
He was the one who walked away.
Traffic cleared pretty fast after that.
I made it to the airport just in time.
But of course, there was another twist.
At check–in, a staff member flagged me down.
“I’m sorry, ma’am.”
“Your flight’s been canceled due to weather.”
“You can rebook or get a refund.”
I glanced outside.
The sky was clear. Moon hanging high. Not a single cloud.
סי
“Seriously? Planes only fly in hurricanes now?”
The woman just kept on with that customer–service smile.
“I’m really sorry, ma’am. That’s the official notice. Nothing we can do.”
I didn’t want to make a scene
“Fine,” I said. “I’ll rebook.”
All the flights to Orlando were sold out–except one.

So I asked about a place to crash for the night.
The airport staff was unusually nice.
They offered me a VIP lounge suite, no extra charge.
The whole thing felt… off.
When I asked, they just kept saying,
“This is just our way of apologizing for the inconvenience.”
So I let it go.
Figured maybe it was just good luck.
Until Spencer showed up at the lounge door,
looking like he’d driven through hell to get there!
Then I knew.
The canceled flight.
The full bookings.
The “apology” perks.
It was all Spencer’s doing.
