Chapter 9
For a long time afterward, I received various anonymous text messages or photos.
Some showed Thane holding Lily on the couch watching TV, looking peaceful and content.
Some showed them holding hands, walking along the beach.
Some showed a messy bed, with crumpled tissues scattered across it.
All were threats and taunts.
I couldn’t say I was heartbroken or sad. The most genuine reaction was the disgust rising
from deep within me, consuming me bit by bit, killing the Thane who had promised never
to betray me in my memories, piece by piece.
The pain was inevitable. You have to cut out the rotten flesh for the wound to scab over.
For an entire month, Thane was busy being lovey–dovey with his young girlfriend while
also battling Marcus.
When we met again a month later, he had lost weight.
“Sophie, I still stand by what I said. If you’re willing, you’ll always be my only wife. Do we
really have to go through with this divorce?”
I looked at the doors of the Court, at the bright blue sky, at the passersby. But I refused to
look at him.
“Thane Cole, your idea of ‘only makes me sick.”
I walked into the bureau.
When we came out again, looking at the certificate in my hand, I felt an unexpected sense
of peace.
This was a new beginning, wasn’t it?

Thane’s expression was much more desolate than mine as he stared at the document, lost in thought.
“Sophie, can we at least still be friends?”
I just smiled without answering. But before leaving, a question suddenly occurred to me.
“Thane, will you marry Lily after divorcing me?”
At that moment, the wind blew past, and ice cream truck blared again.
He seemed lost for a moment, then firmly shook his head: “I told you before, I’ll only marry one woman in my life. That promise will never change.”
With that answer, I felt reassured.
Looking down, I sent the video recording directly to Lily.
After waiting so long for my divorce, the young woman was naturally eager for Thane to marry her. If she saw this video, she’d probably cause another scene.
Sure enough, the very day I sent her the video, she exploded then demanded either he marries her, or they break up.
Thane tried to comfort her while continuing his power struggle with Marcus.
After buying my shares, Thane would be in a stronger position at the company.
But he couldn’t handle Lily’s drama.
On the day of the shareholders‘ meeting, Lily disappeared, traveling to a dangerous
country-
Ukraine. Since she was the girl he currently loved, Thane was frantic with worry.
At this critical moment, Mrs./Cole proposed a perfect solution.
Thane could transfer all his shares to his mother. Combined with the shares Mrs. Cole already held, she would have veto power at the shareholders‘ meeting.

This way, even if Thane wasn’t present, the outcome of the meeting wouldn’t change, and Marcus would inevitably be forced out of the company.
Of course, transferring so many shares to someone else made Thane nervous.
But this wasn’t just anyone, but his mother who carried him for ten months, his own flesh
and blood–his closest relative.
So after only brief hesitation, he signed the share transfer agreement, then hurried abroad to find his girlfriend.
That same day, the shareholders‘ meeting was held.
In the middle of a war, Ukraine was too dangerous and its signal was poor.
So when Thane found Lily and brought her back, he only learned about the massive changes to the company when their plane landed.
