Chapter 3
She leaned back on the sofa, looking up at me with a smirk.
“I heard you’ve been married to Ethan for five years?”
“Yes.”
“But he told me last night he’s never touched you!” Faye changed positions, brushing back her hair to expose the marks on her neck.
“You must be twenty–six now, right? Still a virgin…”
She laughed hysterically. “You heard us last night, didn’t you? Ethan’s such a bad boy–he said you could hear everything clearly next door!”
“Oh… I forgot, you’ve never experienced what a man feels like, especially a powerful man like Ethan.”
“Too bad. At your age, no man would touch you unless you paid them.”
I frowned, because I never expected Ethan’s precious rose to speak this way.
Faced with her words, I just said calmly,/“Everyone has their own way of living. I won’t pin my entire life on a man.”
“Yeah, right.” Faye’s face showed nothing but contempt. “Someone who’s been a housewife for five years, living off a man–you sure you have the right to say that?”
I didn’t want to waste words with her. I sat on the other end of the sofa and continued
looking for apartments.

Finally, claiming the tea I made was too cold, she demanded boiling water, then deliberately spilled it.
Ways.
Most of the scalding hot water poured all over me, with just a few drops splashing onto few drops splashing onto Faye’s wrist. Yet she was already on the phone with Ethan, whimpering and crying as if

she’d been seriously injured.
“Ethan, it hurts so much…”
Ethan rushed back quickly.
After seeing the burn on Faye’s wrist and comforting her with a few gentle words, he strode
toward me.
With a resounding slap, I was knocked to the ground.
“Didn’t I tell you to take care of Faye? Is this how you take care of her?!”
“If Faye’s hand scars even slightly, I’ll make sure you pay tenfold!”
With that, Ethan hurriedly took Faye to the hospital.
I lifted my nightgown–my thigh was already red and blistering.
Looking down, my vision blurred, large tears falling onto my swollen knees.
The burn hurt, but not nearly as much as my heart.
I took a cab and went to the hospital alone.
While treating my wound, the doctor mentioned the neighboring room.
She sighed, “Young girls these days are so pampered. It’s just a tiny burn on her wrist, smaller than a fingernail. Her boyfriend called in the hospital director, threatening to shut down the entire hospital if she scars…”
“What do you know? That’s what it means to be loved. I envy her, finding a handsome, rich boyfriend who cares so deeply…”
I looked down at the ghastly wound on my thigh and smiled bitterly.
From that perspective, Ethan truly was an ideal partner–but all of it hinged on one crucial condition: love.
As for what happens when he doesn’t love someone? Well, I was the perfect example of that.

After my wound was treated, I sat on a bench outside the ward, wondering how to get home, when Ethan walked by with Faye.
He noticed my freshly bandaged wound and frowned.
“You’re hurt too? Why didn’t you say something earlier?” Before I could answer, he continued, “Well, you deserve it. You can’t even carry a cup of water properly. Thankfully Faye’s okay, otherwise-”
“Ethan.” Faye leaned against him sweetly. “Don’t blame her. It’s my fault for asking her to take care of me…”
Ethan held Faye protectively.
“What are you saying? I’ve fed and housed her for five years. It’s completely appropriate for you to treat her like a servant.”
“Whatever makes you happy, she should do.”
They walked away.
From start to finish, Ethan never cared about my injury, not even asking a single question.
I lowered my head, trying several times to walk, but couldn’t.
“Miss, would you like me to contact your husband?” a nurse asked.
I watched their silhouettes disappear down the hallway and smiled bitterly, shaking my head.
“No need. We’re getting divorced soon anyway.”
