Chapter 6
He tried to smile at me.
Just barely.
As if too big a smile might scare me off.
So cautious.
“Valentina… we were supposed to spend tonight together.”
“Why are you leaving?”
I had never seen him this careful around me.
Maybe not since years ago-
when he confessed his feelings the first time.
He had watched my every reaction back then,
like my answer could break him.
Like he actually loved me.
Maybe back then, he really did.
And maybe, just maybe, right now, he still does.
But in between?
So many chances.
So many letdowns.
I tried to force a polite smile.
But even that felt exhausting.

Forget it.
I dropped the smile and met his panicked gaze.
“We’re already divorced, Spencer. Why would I stay?”
“Go be with Isabella. She’s waited for you long enough.”
“She has all of you now. You two should be happy.”
He blinked.
Then completely ignored the Isabella part.
“Divorced?” he repeated. “What do you mean we’re divorced?”
I pulled out my copy of the divorce papers.
“Yours is at the westside house.”
He stared at the papers like they might catch fire.
Shaking his head, faster and faster.
“No… no way… I never agreed to this!”
“This has to be fake. You faked this to trick me, right?”
“This doesn’t count. It can’t count. We’re not divorced!”
Looking at him lose it like this, I honestly thought-
he’s lost his damn mind.
“Spencer.”
He flinched when I said his name.
Hope flickered in his eyes, like he thought I was about to take it all back.

But I just gave him a half–smile.
A little cruel.
“Do you hear yourself right now?”
“You sound like a crazy person.”
The hope on his face shattered.
For once, I was the one calm and in control.
And every word I said cut him like glass.
“Tell me, Spencer.”
“Which one of us is the real crazy one-”
“Me, when I begged you not to leave,”
“Or you, now, begging me to stay?”
He opened his mouth.
No words came out.
“I’m sorry, Valentina. I messed up.”
“I just… I just… I just…”
Three times.
Three tries.
Trying to find a reason.
Trying to justify it.
But he couldn’t even say it out loud.

He knew.
There were no excuses.
His neglect.
His indifference.
His endless disappointments.
They brought us here.
“Let it go, Spencer,” I said softly.
“You look tired. I know I am.‘

“We’re already divorced. Maybe it’s better this way.‘
“No one says you can only love one person.‘
“But I don’t want a love that’s cracked down the middle.”
He looked at me, eyes starting to fill with tears.
I could see all the things he wanted to say,
everything he wanted to undo.
I’d always thought he had beautiful eyes.
The kind that could tell a story without a single word.
I used to be obsessed with those eyes.
But it was those same eyes that once told me-
he didn’t love me anymore./
“It’s over,” I said.
