When I opened my eyes again, I was greeted by the all–too–familiar white of the hospital
room.
The nurse was still banging things around, mumbling under her breath with irritation.
“It’s ridiculous, isn’t it? The one who tried to save people is still unconscious, while the one
who caused all this is alive and kicking.”
“Her own mother is still lying in a coma, but her son has already withdrawn the charges.
What a joke.”
I forced myself to sit up, my eyes sweeping over the nurse’s face.
“You’re Abigail’s friend, aren’t you?”
“She might be dropping the charges, but I’m not.”
The nurse rolled her eyes and left. Not long after, Alexander rushed in, looking disheveled
and frustrated.
“Eleanor, can you stop making trouble for me?!”
“Do you have any idea how much effort it took to calm Abigail down and convince her to
drop the charges?”
“She’s willing to let this go. What more do you want?!”
I looked coldly at Alexander’s face, refusing to speak.
He seemed startled by how pale and lifeless I looked, his tone softening as if I were some
fragile thing.
“Alright, the nurse said your injuries aren’t too serious.”
“Just go and apologize to Abigail sincerely, and we can all move on.”
Apologize to her?
Chapter 5
I let out a cold laugh.
“I will never apologize to her. I want her behind bars.”
Alexander finally lost control of his temper and grabbed me by the collar.
The veins on the back of his hand bulged, and it looked like he was struggling to keep himself from hitting me.
“Why are you being so unreasonable? Are you out of your mind?”
“I’ve done so much for you, so why are you hell–bent on going against Abigail?”
I shook my head at him and reached under my pillow, pulling out the divorce papers and shoving them in his face.
“I’ve already signed them.”
“Alexander, I’ve told you, it was Abigail who set the fire, trying to kill me and our child.”
Alexander didn’t even look at the divorce papers. He snatched them from me, tore them to
shreds, and threw the pieces at me.
“Eleanor! Do you have any humanity left? Any conscience at all?!”
“You almost killed an innocent young girl, and I’ve done everything I can to help you.
Where do you get the nerve to treat me like this?!!”
Just as he finished yelling, a nurse’s voice sounded from the doorway.
“Alexander, your mother is awake.”
Alexander’s grip on my hand loosened instantly, and he bolted out of the room like a gust of
wind.
With effort, I pushed my weak body to follow him to Marie’s hospital room.
Alexander was kneeling by her bedside, his back tense and stiff.
“Mom, you’re finally awake.”

“Eleanor was just confused. Don’t blame her. It’s my fault for spoiling her, letting her turn
into what she is now…”
Marie frowned, and the next moment, a sharp slap landed across Alexander’s face.
He was completely unprepared and stumbled backward, clutching his rapidly swelling
cheek with utter shock.
“Mom, I know you’re angry, but Eleanor lost the baby.”
“I can’t send her to jail at a time like this. I… I don’t want her to get hurt.”
Standing by the door, I couldn’t help but let out a mocking laugh.
He actually thought Marie slapped him because she believed he married the wrong person.
Marie narrowed her eyes, looking at Alexander with utter disappointment.
“Stop spouting nonsense! What fire? Eleanor was with me the whole day. How could she
have started a fire?!”
Alexander froze in place, stammering, struggling to piece together a coherent response.
“But Abigail clearly said Eleanor invited her over, set the fire on purpose, and tried to kill
her.”
At these words, Marie struggled to sit up–determined to slap some sense into her worthless
son again.
But fresh from her coma, her body refused to cooperate. All she could manage was a
venomous glare at Alexander before hissing:
“You bastard! How could I have raised such a fool!?”
“Didn’t you hear me? Eleanor was with me!”
“When you carried Abigail out of the house and she said there was no one left inside, it was Eleanor who gave me the last bit of water to keep me alive!”
Alexander’s pupils dilated, and he crumpled to the floor, paralyzed by shock.

Marie looked up and finally noticed me standing at the door. She waved me over with a trembling hand.
A whirlwind of emotions surged through me, but I managed to speak:
“Marie… Mrs. Caldwell.”
