Ever since Jack brought up our daughter, I’d been hanging on by a thread.
That day came flooding back–Emily, Alan, the hospital, everything.
I still remember the helplessness, the rage, the agony outside the OR.
I wanted to rip them both apart.
But somehow, part of me still clung to hope.
Part of me still remembered the way Emily used to be.
And I hated myself for it.
“Why?”
“Why didn’t you tell me something that huge?”
Maybe it finally hit her.
Maybe she just couldn’t keep pretending.
Her eyes were red as she kept asking me, over and over, why I didn’t call her.
“I did call.”
“You just weren’t paying attention.”
I pulled out my phone and showed her all the missed calls, all the texts I’d sent.
She pulled out hers, disbelief étched across her face.
Finally, she saw them–dozens of missed calls from that night.
“It was loud at the time. Ifigured you were just checking up on me again, and I was so annoyed, so I…”

She let go of me and crouched down, hugging her arms, sobbing.
“You’re right, Emily.”
“You were sick of me–so you won’t hear from me again.”
“I saw that divorce agreement you left lying around.”
“I signed it.”
I dropped the signed papers at her feet.
This time, she didn’t try to stop me.
I walked out, flagged a cab, and headed back to the office.
That company–our company–was something we started together.
Back when we graduated, Emily had an offer from some random import–export firm.
But I pitched a startup idea, brought in my credentials and awards, and we went for it.
That’s how she got to where she is today.
And as I sat through that dinner earlier, something clicked.
That company still had my name on it.
I could take on projects under the company name, finish them, and then walk away.
So I went straight to the design department.
There should still be files of my old projects in the archives.
The team had turned over so many times, hardly anyone remembered me.
I kept to myself in the back/flipping through folders.
No one bothered me.

The whole office was buzzing–everyone was talking about the company retreat.
No wonder Emily was packing.
She hadn’t gone on a business trip–she’d gone on vacation.
With Alan.
Aside from the trip, everyone was gossiping about him.
“I heard Alan’s moving to our department full–time.”
“He’s the one who got us that Shangri–La team getaway!”
“Right? He just asks, and the boss makes it happen.”
“Well yeah–Emily’s got a thing for him.”
“But isn’t Emily, like, married?”
Someone dropped that last line, and the entire room fell silent.
I looked up, assuming Emily had just walked in.
But no–it was just Alan, holding her hand, looking smug.
They couldn’t see me in the corner, but I saw everything.
Emily walked him to his desk, laid down a cushion for him, and helped him sit like it was second nature.
So she did have a softer side after all.
