Chapter 9
I stared coldly at Einily.
For someone in her position, she sure knew how to play the game.
“I’m a bit of a clean freak. I don’t like hanging around messy people.”
“You can take him home yourself.”
“And I prefer to take a cab.”
I rarely ever rode in Emily’s car.
She never offered to give me a ride and didn’t let me touch her car–said it was for work, in case she needed to rush off to some emergency.
She’d rather send me money to cover a taxi ride.
But when it came to Alan, she played personal chauffeur.
I’d seen Alan sitting in the front seat more times than I could count.
The lingering smell of men’s cologne and sweat had practically soaked into the car.
Emily tried to say something more, but the honking cars behind us made her give up.
In the end, she just drove off.
Not long after, she called.
“Can you wait for me downstairs? I’ll swing by and pick you up.”
“No need, I’ve already gotten a cab.”
“I’ll meet you downstairs later then.”
I hung up in frustration.

It wasn’t like it was the first time I took a cab.
Why pretend to be so concerned?
I realized that everything Emily had done with Alan–the things that used to bother me–no longer had the same impact.
In the end, I got home before she did.
Usually, by now, I’d have dinner ready and waiting for her.
And after a quick meal, she’d either rush back to work or text me saying she had a business
dinner and wouldn’t be home.
I always kept food warm for her, in case she came home hungry.
But it always ended up sitting there, uneaten, until I tossed it in the trash the next day.
Emily finally came home.
She rushed straight to the kitchen.
The house was quiet. I sat in our daughter’s room, lost in thought, but I could still hear her
cooking.
Half an hour later, she brought over a bowl of soup.
“A few months ago, Alan landed some big projects, which is why we had that celebration.”
“Alan’s been with the company for three years now.”
“He’s worked hard, which is why I moved him to the planning department.”
“Just now, I dropped him off at home.”
“I’m actually recommending him for another company,
She blew on the soup as she spoke, trying to act casual.
She had an explanation for everything.

And it all sounded reasonable.
But why, on the day of the celebration, wouldn’t she take my calls?
Why did she insist on going to Alan’s place when she could’ve just had the driver take her home?
Why wait until she dropped Alan off to tell me about him leaving the company?
All these little questions, if you just pried a little, would all come pouring out.
But I couldn’t be bothered to expose her lies.
I just responded with a simple, “Got it.”
