The next day at 10 a.m., Ethan knocked on my door exactly on time.
I opened it to find Ethan, as always, in his signature gold–rimmed glasses, black suit, and a pricey watch on his wrist.
He looked every bit the business professional.

“Did you go grocery shopping?”
I was shocked to see what Ethan was holding.
“Yeah.”
He walked into my house and placed the groceries in the kitchen before taking off his jacket.
“Where’s the apron?”
I froze, watching his calm movements, and answered honestly,
“On the wall.”
After putting on the apron, Ethan pushed up his glasses.
“I’ve written up everything for the meeting this afternoon and put it in my bag.”
“You can take a look.”
He closed the kitchen door behind him.
I stood there, thinking for a moment, and couldn’t help but smile.

Whenever I asked him why he was so nice to me, he’d always reply,
“Because you’re too clueless, so I might as well do it for you.”
I chuckled and pulled the file out of Ethan’s bag, reading through it carefully. The meeting with Nathaniel’s lawyer that afternoon was going to be a tough one.
I had to admit, Ethan was an amazing lawyer.
He’d thought of everything, even things I hadn’t considered.
As I read the papers, I could almost picture him sitting in his office, planning everything step by step.
Just then, I heard a knock at the door.
I put the papers down and walked over to open it.
“What are you doing here?”
Standing outside were Nathaniel and our son, Nathaniel Jr.
“Mom, I missed you.”
Our son looked up at me, his eyes full of affection.
Nathaniel adjusted his tie, his gaze intense.
“Vivi, can we come in?”
A wave of irritation surged inside me.
I didn’t hold back, saying bluntly,
“No. This is my house. Please leave.”
