Chapter 41: Muffins
It’s official. My father is an idiot. – Angel
Nan handed Taz a blueberry muffin and sat down at the table with her. She knew that the woman had been out here for hours and probably didn’t get much sleep the night before. Peeling the paper off her own oversized muffin, she tried to remain casual.
“How was the sunrise?” Nan asked.
“Beautiful.” Taz answered quietly. “Lonely.”
“He has always loved sunrise and sunset.” Angel said as she and Mel joined them at the long glass patio table. “I sent him some pictures of them from all over Europe. The
Vatican was my favorite.”
“Paris.” Mel added with her Spanish accent. The two women shared a look as they clasped
hands. Angel raised their hands to her mouth and kissed the back of the darker hand.
“I’m trying to eat.” Nan teased. “You have a room upstairs for all that crap.”
“Lo siento, Abuela.” Mel said apologetically.
“I have no idea what you’re saying,” Nan admitted, “but I love the way it sounds.”
Taz and Angel both gave a little laugh. Smiling, Mel translated, “I’m sorry, grandmother.”
“When do you think my idiot father will show up? If he shows up.”
“He’ll show up.” Nan said firmly. “He’s too much in love not to.”
“I doubt that.” Taz said quietly looking away to hide her tears.
“I don’t.” Came the soft reply as Angel took her hand. “He’s never told me about any woman in his life before. I met one a few years back, purely by accident, and she didn’t
even know he had a daughter.”
“I thought that you were a lot younger.” Taz admitted as a tear slid down her cheek. “I bought you a baby doll for Christmas.”
“I’m going to assume that you’re not talking about lingerie.” Angel asked and Taz nodded

her head. “Good. I don’t ever want to get lingerie from my stepmom. But I will treasure the doll.”
“You still want it?” Taz asked looking at her a little surprised.
“She loves opening presents.” Mel informed them.
“I do.” She admitted. “But also, because you took the time to pick it out and buy it for me.”
“I wish I had known how old you are. I would have gotten you something a little more appropriate.”
“I’m a little upset with him over that.”
“I’ve been thinking about that.” Nan said brushing crumbs off the table. Three sets of eyes watched her intently, waiting for her to continue. “How would you have reacted if your dad had told you that he was dating someone your age?”
Angel thought for a moment and then cringed as she said, “Not very well.”
“And you?” Nan continued. “How would you have reacted if he had told you that he had a daughter your age?”
Taz shrugged her shoulders. “I know he’s older than me. Having a kid my age isn’t out of
the question. Obviously.” She gave a quick squeeze to Angel’s hand.

“You’re better than me.” Nan said with a little laugh. “I don’t think I could do it.”
“He used those years with other women perfecting his talents.” Taz said quietly as she
blushed.
“What you’re saying is that my dad is good in bed?” Angel teased.
“No, she’s saying my grandson is good in bed.”
“I’m saying my man is damn good in bed. And on the floor. Against a wall. In the shower.
In a tub.”
“In a box with a fox?” Nan laughed.

“Haven’t tried that.”
“Yet.” Mel added. “You two should come to Spain. Fly on British Airways. They have bathrooms big enough to join the club.”
“Or you can get an overnight flight with seats at the very back.” Angel smiled at her girlfriend.
They heard the rumbling of the bike as Riffraff made his way up the hill. Angel and Mel smiled at Taz before gathering their cups and trash and heading inside to give them privacy. Nan gathered up her stuff but waited for him to park before she too stood up. She met her grandson at the small gate to the short picket fence used to keep her Chihuahua in the yard.
“If
you let her go, you’re a fucking idiot. That girl loves you. More than you deserve right now.” Nan told him. She cupped his cheek and pressed her lips to his other cheek.
“I know, Nan. I fucked up. And I’m here to beg for mercy.” He told her as he hugged her close.
“Where’s your helmet?” she asked him sternly.
“I left in a hurry to get here.” He said sheepishly. He took a deep breath before whispering in her ear. “I need something, Nan.”
She pulled a small object out of her pocket and placed it in his hand. “I was hoping that you would ask for it. Make me proud, Oliver.”
He released her and she went into the house as he slipped the small object in his pocket walking towards Taz. He sat in the chair next to her that his daughter had been in earlier. Taking her hands in his, he raised them up and kissed her knuckles.
“I have told everyone else, now I need to tell you.” Riffraff said looking at her over their clasped hands. “I fucked up. I fucked up really damn bad.”
“Are you still to old for me?” Taz asked him quietly.
“Probably.” He kissed her knuckles again. “But I don’t care. All I know is that I never want to spend another night without you. I love you. Took me too damned long to figure that
out. It scares me. How much I feel for you scares me.”

Riffraff lowered his head, kissing the back of her hands. When he looked back up at her, tears had filled his eyes. “Losing you scares me more.”
Tears filled her own eyes as Taz rested her forehead against his. “I don’t want to lose you, either. I love you, Riff.”
Riffraff shifted and touched her mouth with his. Taz shifted and deepened the kiss. He released her hands and pulled her into his lap. She straddled him on the armless chair and wrapped her arms around his neck as his own arms pressed her body to his.
Breaking off the kiss to catch her breath, Taz leaned her head back as he began to trail kisses down her neck.
“I need you, babe.” He murmured against her neck.
“Here?” she asked a little surprised.
“Forever. I should have patched you before. Months ago.”
“You still can.” Taz pointed out.
“You should have flowers and a romantic setting.”
“To claim me as yours?”
Shifting them, he made her look at him. “I’m an idiot. I don’t… I want… Fuck this. Marry
me.”
