Chapter

Michael’s expression darkened as he glanced at the divorce papers on the table

His entire demeanor shifted, looking somberly at me

Diana, I know you’re emotional right now. But we just got married. You’re acting on impulse. I can forgive that.”

I stared coldly at him, silent for a while, before finally speaking

Michael, if anyone knows whether this is impulsive, it should be you.”

His face stiffened, and he interrupted Susie before she could chime in, Susie, Diana and I have things to discuss. Could you head back first?”

Though Susie still wanted to speak up, her eyes widened In shock when her gaze fell on the details of the divorce settlement

She opened her mouth to curse me, but before she could get a single word out, Michael pushed her out of the room and shut the door

The moment the door clicked shut, his voice softened

Diana, I know you’re upset about how close Susie and I are

But you don’t have to be. She’s just a sister to me. You are my wife

And besides, divorcing so soon after the wedding? What would people say?”

I didn’t reply. Instead, I watched him, calm and unshaken

Michael, you don’t love me

So if we get divorced and you can finally be with Susie, shouldn’t you be happy?”

He angrily tossed the divorce papers aside

That’s ridiculous. Of course I-”

Before he could finish, his phone rang

That special ringtone…

I didn’t even need to look to know it was Susie calling

Under my unwavering stare, he hesitated before answering the call

I couldn’t hear what Susie was saying on the other end, but whatever it was, it had him standing up immediately

Something happened to Susie. I have to go check on her.”

I remained unfazed, not a single emotion flickering in my eyes

He leaned down, trying to kiss me. However, I turned my head away in obvious rejection

His face flushed with embarrassment, and he straightened up to stand awkwardly

Diana, I promise that after this, I’ll keep my distance from Susie.”

I bent down, picked up the divorce papers from the floor, and spoke evenly

I didn’t have time to tell you yet, but I was diagnosed with a tumor. The surgery is tomorrow at 10 a.m. Be there.”

Hit by the unexpected news, his hand trembled slightly to reach out and touch my face. However, I turned away again to avoid him

He stood there, speechless, until his phone rang again

This time, his hesitation lasted only a moment. He made his choice

Without another word, he turned and walked out the door toward her as though she were the only one who truly mattered

There was nothing else left to say. I blocked his number and then deleted every last trace of him

The next morning, he never showed up

It was fine, though

My parents were with me and watched as I was wheeled into the operating room

The sterile, cold air inside the room sent a shiver through me. Even then, it wasn’t as cold as the feeling of a scalpel cutting into flesh

As the anesthesia kicked in, I slowly lost consciousness

When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed

Mom and Dad sat by my side; Mom’s face was pale and tearstreaked. The moment she saw me awake, she clutched my hand, voice trembling

Diana, does it hurt?”

I smiled weakly, shaking my head

They gave me painkillers. I can’t feel a thing.”

She bit her lip, clearly holding back more words

Dad, on the other hand, sat silently on the other side and finally spoke after a long pause

Divorce. You have to divorce him.”

I nodded

Good.”

Mom, still worried about my health, continued to hover anxiously even after the doctors confirmed the tumor was benign

Every day, she brought homecooked meals to the hospital. Under her meticulous care, I recovered quickly

The day before I was discharged, I could walk on my own again

Following the doctor’s advice, I took slow walks down the hospital corridor

My parents weren’t too keen on letting me go alone. However, since it was close to dinner, Mom went to prepare food, and Dad left to get me some water

So, I walked alone

That was when I ran into them

Michael was supporting Susie as they walked down the hall together

The moment they saw me, they froze

An awkward silence stretched between us

Then, after what felt like ages, Michael finally spoke, his tone cautious

Diana, Susie was in a car accident. I was worried about her so I came to take care of her

I didn’t know you were in this hospital, too. What happened? You’re really sick?”

Not wanting to waste another second on them, I turned to leave. Before I could take another step, he wrist angrily

grabbed my

What’s with this attitude? I’m your husband! Do I not have the right to know why my wife is in the hospital?”

I yanked my arm back, but his grip only tightened

So I slapped him

Michael, you dare call yourself my husband?!”

Fury flared in his eyes

He gripped my wrist even tighter, and his voice dropped to a dangerous growl

Why wouldn’t I? Listen up, Diana. Even if we divorce, I’ll still take full control of the company. I am-”
