Chapter 5
In the days that followed, Michael really did cut off all contact with Susie.
Right in front of me, he deleted and blocked all of her contact information. He started acting overly attentive, checking on me constantly as if afraid I’d slip away,
When I was finally discharged from the hospital, I followed Michael back to our home.
During this time, Susie had tried to reach him multiple times, but he rejected her every time.
Still, I knew it wouldn’t last. He wouldn’t be able to hold out for long
My follow–up appointment was coming up soon. The day before, I looked at Michael, who seemed a little guilty, and acted as if I didn’t notice anything.
“Michael, my check–up is tomorrow. You’ll come with me, right?”
Michael quickly reassured me, making promises without hesitation. “Diana, of course. Don’t worry, I’ll be there.”
I nodded, satisfied. Then, while Michael was running errands, I sent a message to Susie.
[Looks like you’re not as important to Michael as you thought.
[He promised to go to the hospital with me tomorrow. He told me you were nothing more than a fling.]
As expected, Susie took the bait. After a few moments of hesitation, she sent back a short but furious reply.
[Just you wait.]
I knew she wouldn’t disappoint me.
Sure enough, on the day of my check–up, Michael never showed up. However, the photos of him passionately kissing Susie at the entrance of an apartment complex went viral.
Michael and I had built our success from the ground up.
While it was true he came from some money, most of our wealth came from our hard work after marriage.
During our toughest times, we used our love story as a key part of our brand marketing, turning our relationship into a symbol of our company’s success.
So when the pictures of Michael and Susie made headlines, the internet exploded.
People were furious. They called him heartless, a man who climbed to success only to betray the person who built it with him.
I didn’t waste any time. I simply sent him the divorce appointment I had booked in advance.
[Tomorrow, 10 a.m. See you at the courthouse.]
He didn’t respond. However, when I got home, I found him sitting in the darkened living room.
The place felt cold and empty.
Michael was slumped in the corner by the coffee table, surrounded by half–empty bottles of whiskey and wine.
The moment he saw me, his eyes turned red.
“Diana, you knew this day would come, didn’t you?”

I looked at him with a smile, but my eyes held no warmth.
“Michael, you were the one who signed the divorce papers rst.
“You were also the one who chose to go to Susie. So tell me what does it have to do with me?”
Desperation filled his gaze, his entire detneanor screaming regret.
“Diana, I know I made a mistake.
“We’ve been together for so long. You know me. I’ve never truly betrayed you.
“I was just-”

“You were just playing around. I know you never went all the way with Susie,” I interrupted, my voice eerily calm. “I know that deep down, I’ll always be the one you love.”
With every word, hope flickered back into Michael’s eyes. By the time I finished, he looked almost certain that we could go back to the way things were.
“Diana, since you know that, can we-”
I met his expectant gaze and shattered his illusion without hesitation.
“No. It’s over.”
