Chapter 4
It must have hurt so badly that I was numb, but as soon as I let my guard down, I blacked out.
The sharp scent of disinfectant filled my nose when I woke up. As soon as I opened my eyes, I heard Leon’s concerned voice.
“Ms. Hunt! You’re finally awake.”
I nodded slightly, only to find that Leo was looking at me with an odd look on his face.
“The attacker was Yasmine’s ex–boyfriend. He’s been arrested.” He hesitated for a moment before adding somewhat awkwardly, “Eanes came by several times an hour ago. He said he was your husband and that he wanted to take care of you.
“But I knew he was the one who pulled you in front of the knife, so I didn’t let him in.”
For three years, Eanes had gone to great lengths to keep our marriage a secret. Aside from his close circle of so- called friends, no one knew about us. But today, he admitted our relationship in front of Leon.
If this had happened in the past, I would have been ecstatic to know that Eanes was worried about me. But now, all I felt was a creeping coldness down my spine.
I closed my eyes, saying nothing, yet I kept recalling how Eanes grabbed and pushed me in front of Yasmine, forcing me to take the knife for her.
No matter how much I didn’t want to admit it, the truth was undeniable–Yasmine was now more important to
Eanes than I was.
I had several missed calls from Eanes. My chest tightened as my eyes fell on the wallpaper–a photo of us from when we first got together. We had been so young, our smiles so bright and carefree.
And now? I had become nothing more than a woman trapped in an invisible cage, revolving around Eanes like a spinning top, my world dictated by his every move.
Eanes had nothing but contempt and ridicule left for me..
There were times when I wanted to ask him what exactly I meant to him and why he agreed to marry me in the first place if he never liked me. After all, his family was the one that proposed the marriage.
In the early days of our marriage, Eanes and I actually had some beautiful memories together. I was always so busy with work that I’d often forget to eat, and every time, he would bring me a packed meal.
On those humid summer nights, he would walk just a few steps before complaining about the heat, stubbornly crouching down in protest. And every time, without a word, I would sit beside him, keeping him company.
I cherished these simple, quiet moments of happiness.
Eanes, however, complained time and time again that I was boring and completely clueless about how to cheer others up.
To please him, I searched for relationship advice online, asked my friends for suggestions, and wracked my brain trying to keep him satisfied…
But everything changed ever since he started working and reconnected with Yasmine.
At first, Eanes would simply mention Yasmine and her boyfriend in casual conversations. But eve.. realized she was no longer just a topic of discussion–she had become a living presence between us.
Things got worse after Yasmine’s breakup.

I brought it up with Eanes multiple times, but he would always cut me off impatiently, insisting that Yasmine was just a friend and their relationship was purely platonic. He said I shouldn’t think of Yasmine as a rival.
But then…
All the meals I had painstakingly prepared, only to be left untouched or carelessly knocked over, the phone calls that were always met with an irritated tone, the anniversaries that passed by as if they meant nothing…
There were too many things that proved the same truth–Eanes had long grown tired of me.
When I returned home from the hospital, I was surprised to find Eanes in the kitchen. Seeing me, he quickly came over to check my injury.
“Since your assistant wouldn’t let me see you, I came home and made some bone broth for you instead. You should be fine, right?”
I quietly pulled my hand away from his grasp.
Eanes‘ brows furrowed, and he grabbed my wrist. “What are you doing?” he demanded.
“Nothing. I’m just tired. I’d like to be alone for a while.” I yanked my wrist back with force.
