Chapter 5
Eanes grew visibly impatient. “What exactly are you throwing a tantrum about?”
“I’m not.”
I told the truth, but all I got in return was his merciless ridicule.
“Oh, please. You’re obviously angry. You do know how old you are, right? Acting all jealous and petty at your age- how childish can you be?”
I was two years older than Yasmine. Every time we argued, he would mock me–sometimes outright, sometimes subtly implying I was stupid and past my prime. Then, held sit back and enjoy the sight of me getting upset.
But this time, I wasn’t angry. And I didn’t ask if he regretted marrying me.
I looked at Eanes, expressionless. “Think whatever you want.” Then, I walked upstairs without another word, leaving him stomping in frustration behind me.
I had just laid down in bed when Eanes changed into his pajamas and slipped in behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist.
This unspoken signal between us was his usual way of making peace after a fight. But tonight, I didn’t want to play along. He kissed me, only for me to shove him away forcefully within seconds.
Eanes lost his patience and yanked the blanket off me. “Jocelyn, what the hell are you doing? Don’t forget that it’s your ovulation period.”
We were not child–free by choice. Eanes wanted a kid–not out of love, but to secure a bigger share of the inheritance when his father passed away.
So, during my ovulation period every month, he would suddenly become very proactive.
I turned my back to him without a glance. “My hand hurts. I’m going to sleep.”
Hearing me say the words I had heard from him countless times before, Eanes froze for a moment, then grabbed a pillow and hurled it at me in frustration before storming out of the bedroom, his face dark with anger.
I knew he wouldn’t come looking for me for the next few days.
In the past, I was always the one clinging to him. But tonight, I slept better without him beside me than I had in a long time.
To avoid running into Eanes, I stayed at the office for the next few days.
However, I hadn’t expected him to lose patience so quickly. Before long, he called me, his tone still laced with arrogance. “Why haven’t you been home?”
“I’ve been staying at the office. Work’s been busy.”
Without thinking, he retorted, “How busy can a housewife be? You-” He stopped mid–sentence. Realizing his mistake, he corrected himself, “What about me? Are you just going to leave me alone at home? Who’s going to cook for me?”
I laughed, infuriated. “You’re not a little kid. Can’t you cook for yourself? If you really can’t manage, hire a maid. And if all else fails, maybe your dear friend Yasmine can do it for you.”
Eanes went silent for a moment, then exploded. “Who the hell do you think you are, talking to me like that? Staying out all night is one thing, ignoring housework is another, but now you’re crossing the line.

“Are you trying to end this marriage? If you don’t want this marriage, then let’s end it. I’m sick of having to deal with your moods every day.”
I let out a deep sigh and replied, “In that case, let’s end it. I’ve had enough, Eanes.”
He cursed under his breath and hung up on me.
I knew he was furious. However, I didn’t care anymore.
With most of my work wrapped up, I finally had the chance to leave early for once. What I didn’t expect was to see Eanes waiting outside my office, offering to pick me up from work.
Gone was his usual arrogance. He even opened the car door for me, gesturing for me to get in.
“What’s this?” I asked in confusion. “Are you not afraid of getting caught by reporters anymore?”
I knew exactly what this was.
He wasn’t here because he cared about me. He was here because he enjoyed the thrill of controlling me.
