Chapter 6
After all, I used to accommodate him in everything, as he was the center of my universe. That led him to believe that I couldn’t live without him.
“It’s fine. If we get caught by the paparazzi, I’ll just say you’re a business partner. No one would suspect anything about a business dinner.
“I know why you’re upset. It’s because I didn’t celebrate our anniversary with you, right? I’ll make it up to you today.”
My hand paused on the car door handle, and my expression remained cold. “That won’t be necessary.”
Eanes was surprised. “Aren’t anniversaries the most important thing to you? I remember you being angry at me for a long time that one time I was on a business trip and forgot our anniversary. Come on. Don’t be mad. I’ll make it up to you.”
Eanes never understood me. Yes, I cared about our wedding anniversary, but what mattered more was how important I was to him. Even now, he still refused to acknowledge me publicly and give me the recognition I deserved.
I didn’t respond as I got into the car.
Before he could start the engine, his phone rang.
“What’s wrong? Did you see a doctor? I’m busy right now, so I can’t make it. What? 104°F? I’m coming right away! Wait for me!”
After hanging up, Eanes glanced at me with a guilty look. “Yasmine has a fever. She’s feeling sick. I need to go check on her. As for the anniversary, I’ll make it up to you next time, okay?”
Eanes‘ expression was dripping with concern.
Seeing that I remained silent, he frowned. “You’re not getting jealous when a life is at stake, are you?”
He immediately looked relieved when I shook my head.
“Get out of the car, then,” he urged.
Impassively, I met his gaze and spoke in a calm voice, “Eanes, let’s get a divorce.”
For a minute, the inside of the car felt frozen, as if time had stopped.
I watched as his brows furrowed even deeper, as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
“What did you say?”
I repeated myself, “I said, let’s get a divorce.”
As soon as I uttered those words, his voice, filled with frustration, rose sharply. “We can celebrate our anniversary every year. It’s not a big deal! If we don’t celebrate today, we can just do it another day. Can’t you be more understanding?
“Why do you always have to be so unreasonable? Yasmine is my best friend. She has no bad intentions. Why are you asking for a divorce at a time like this when it’s a matter of life and death?”
He spoke with such righteousness, as if I had been the one in the wrong all along.
“I’m being understanding. That’s why I’m choosing to divorce you and let you be with Yasmine. Isn’t that better?”
I shot back.

Eanes stared at me before he suddenly let out a mocking laugh. “I see now. You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you? You’re trying to stall me so I can’t go to Yasmine. Ha! I never thought you’d play hard to get. However, that won’t work on me.”
Seeing him like this, I felt an unexpected sense of relief that I realized the importance of cutting losses in time.

After he was done scolding me, I got off the car.
As I watched his car speed away, I let out a deep sigh and went back to work.
Back in the office, I continued coding when a cup of coffee was placed beside my hand.
“What’s wrong? Did you and your husband have an argument?”
Shawn Jacobi, my friend from college, had joined the company after graduation. We used to talk about everything However, we gradually drifted apart after I got married.
Now, as the head of the tech department, he and I still interacted occasionally.
